Sorry Cheryl, it doesn't look familiar, is the stem purple?

Arlington, TX

brownish purple
Hm, I wonder where I got it from. I thought it was you because its in one of the containers like the other plant you gave me. The RU plants were all labled as far as I can remember.

It look like the Rose of Sharon twigs ( Hibiscus) my neighbor gave me to root. Gee I hope I am right. I can never ID anything but a hosta.:(

Have you tried narrowing it down from your trades list?

Arlington, TX

Yes and can't find anything that would match it.

No, nor an East Texas Mistflower.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

Could it be a Datura?

Arlington, TX

Not datura. I found some faint white writing on the black pot. It looks like"Tomattio, zoobe?, fiesta? Did I ask for a tomatillo from someone and did I get one? Or, is it just left over writing.

Wow, looks so familiar and the name escapes me at the moment.

I'd be interested in what it actually is.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

If it is a tomatillo, you need 2 for them to produce.

Arlington, TX

Hm I wasn't told that.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Cheryl, I took some pics of the tomatillos we picked up from Kate at the RU. Maybe this will help you know if this is what you have.

Yes, I am pretty certain its a tomatillo but it doesnt matter if I need two I am just going to compost it.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Why not just try to grow it? Tomatillos germinate and grow at an exceptional rate and HEB has some for sale so you could buy it a friend. : ) I never sell/give away those as a single plant because you need at least 2 plants more is better. If you want a plant that needs no care this is the way to go. If you would like to start a few from seed dmail me. (sorry this is not an open offer, this is the end of the season and I only have a few seeds left). You can direct sow the seeds and they will be up and growing within 3 weeks, they can be planted deep like a tomato, they will develop roots all the way up the stem. It seems sad to compost it : (.

Arlington, TX

I will give them a go next year. Its pretty late to be looking for and planting things here in TX.

They love the heat. I just saw some plants at the store last week. I plant all summer long. It works for me. I'm still putting out tomatoes, but I have 30+ in the ground already. This year it has been so wet that there were times I couldn't get in the garden. Whatever works for you.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We've yet to plant ours and I'm glad to hear that they love the heat and can be planted deep! Thanks for that info, Lisa.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

You can direct sow them if you wish, but if you start the seeds in a flat. Plant them deep when you pot them up. They grow really fast. Treat them like tomatoes, plant them deep in your garden too. I just sold a flat of them and the stems were the size of a pencil. This batch grew slower because our temps have been so crazy, but they were already starting to bloom. They are considered an Edible weed in Mexico, it seems like the less attention they get the better they do. Stephanie, what color are yours? I do wish Id planted my beans earlier, Id love to have your wall of beans.

I plant/sow all summer long in Texas. The one exception was last summer.

The tomatillos are green. Is that what you're asking? These are the hubby's as I don't care for tomatillos or green tomatoes. He also has some Green Zebra tomatoes to plant. I don't know why since we've grown those previously and he didn't like the taste! LOL I wish he would've asked me before picking them up off the table and putting them with our stuff to bring home.

As for beans, maybe next year, I'll grow the burgundy beans. That would be fun!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that's what I was asking. Lol I don't care for tomatillos either but I keep the "extras" so I have Purple ones this year. Good luck with the asking, hehe, you would think, if HE didn't like the taste he wouldn't have picked them up.
