Can anyone ID this little snake?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I mowed the back yard and when I went back to the porch (which is just concrete slab, same level as the yard) I saw this little guy. I shooed him off because either the chicken or the cat would be too interested, but I am hoping it is not one I should have... ahem... dispatched to that great garden in the sky. Garter snake? The little table it is under is only 8", so stretched out he would be maybe 12 - 14", i would guess. Pretty little thing.

Thanks!

Looks like a Garter snake. Good snake to have around. I'm glad you didn't dispatch him. We have a rat snake that stays around the house. I have swept him out of the garage , but he helps with the mice. A good snake to have around.

Thanks, y'all. I looked in my field guide and never found a PERFECT match, but every picture that made me wonder was a garter snake of some sort. Hopefully he is happy in the back yard.

(Of course I'm telling people at work it was a diamondback rattler...)

:)

Texas Brown snake (Storeria dekayi texana), or diamond back rattler ;0)

The pattern is just like the Texas brown snake. Thanks, cocoa_lulu!
