Looked in bug files without any luck so just going to post here hoping Dale shows up or anyone that can ID this one My thinking is a cresent of some sort notice that the wings are almost straight across and a near perfect Delta shape don't think this will show but the antenniappear to be banded
unknown butterfly
I believe that is a Hackberry Emperor butterfly, very pretty, one of the blessings from Hackberry trees.
Thanks Jo kinda what I tought also but I only have a little Golden Book on Butterfly really need to get a better ID book
You are welcome, they are beautiful and very friendly.
It depends on it's size too Frostweed, as the Tawny Emperor is exactly the same color, etc, except a lot smaller than the hackberry. I happen to have both of these at my butterfly feeder! In fact, I also got a lot more different species than I expected & never saw before! I am really pleased!
You are right, they are all so much fun!!
I am saying hackberry emperor too. It may or may, not be an identifying mark, but if you notice it has a sideways happy face near the head on the upper dorsal wing. The Tawny has two unbroken lines in that area. First pic I have id as Tawny and second Hackberry.....as always open for expert clarification LOL!
Thank you Sheila, they are all beautiful.
