Mexican Hat?

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm weeding and just came across this, which is in the vicinity of where I USE to have a beautiful clump of Mexican Hat, which was given to me at (I think) my first RU, but which also succcumbed to my Ultra Kill caper.

I figure it's probably just a weed.

I'm not sure what that is, but most wildflowers look like weeds! LOL I say let it grow and see what it becomes.

It does look like mexican hat, are the little flowers around it part of it? If they are it is not.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, Stephanie, can't hurt.

No, Josephine, there aren't any flowers on it. If you see flowers, it must be the weeds around it.

Thanks, girls.

In that case i am pretty sure it is mexican hats.

My plan was more weeding today. As you may remember, my flower beds are actually covered in weeds. I decided early on this year that, since we were trying to economize, I'd not mulch this year. Surely I don't need to mulch EVERY year, right? Well, wrong. My new opinion is that DH doesn't need new underwear EVERY year, and those 26 grands don't need birthday and Christmas presents EVERY year, but I do need yearly mulching. lol I'm not up on the weed names (except nutsedge), but most are pulling up pretty easily. I only have the "nuts" on the north side, and I'm dipping the tops in weed killer, not letting it touch the ground or other plants. I know this info will make upper lips curl on the purists out there, but I think that's my best line of defense at this point, considering the task at hand. I'm clearing a 2-4 foot wide area at a time on both sides of the house (following the shade), and immediately putting down my leftover red hardwood mulch. Will make a run for a truckload of mulch soon.

I'm using Jeff's door prize weed popper to do this job. Just poke it in, pop the weed up, pick it out, and pitch it away. Actually, there's a real rhythm to it--poke, pot, pick and pitch. Poke, pop, pick and pitch. I need music.

Yes mulch is a total necessity here in Texas, but you need to get it for free.

It sort of looks like Ragweed

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Free sounds good, Frostweed.

I'm pretty familiar with ragweed, morganc, and I'm pretty sure it's not that, but hey, I've been wrong before. Like suggested earlier, I'll watch it.

OK, Josephine, please expound on the FREE mulch.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I know that in Fort Worth, the city offers free mulch from all the limbs and brush picked up at curbside. I'm always afraid of what's going to be in it, though.

We call the local tree trimming people ours is Tree Top tree service, and they will deliver a truckload for free.
They are happy to do it because the city charges them $75 to dump at the landfill so they actually save money when they give it to you.
You might check on companies that are in your area and see what they do.

Thanks, Josephine and Stephanie. I'm checking into this soon. In the meantime, I picked up two yards of mulch at Thelin's yesterday. Just headed out to unload it. Hope I can get it done before one, when I need to come in and cook. Today (third Thursday) is when I cook for Mercy Heart, our ministry to the incarcerated and their families (past and present). Crock pot going now.

You are an angel Sybil.

Try using distilled vinegar rather than weed killer. It works just as well and is MUCH cheaper ($1.98 per gallon at the grocery store). Just put some in a spray bottle and off you go. Do treat it the same as the weed killer though; it will take down most anything you spray it on.
Last summer, during the drought, our electric company had a tree service out cutting the tree limbs away from the power lines. They were very happy to leave the shredded limbs with me rather than driving 30 miles back to Houston to drop them off. Our little town keeps a pile of free mulch behind City Hall as well. Check around & I'll bet you find some for free.

Thanks for the tips, sweetmommy. I absolutely WILL be trying the vinegar.

Yes, it is MH. The little hats are beginning to form now.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Excellent, I am happy for you, they are great plants and they are perennial.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep, it's a cutie.
