Yep, I've got a tubful of it that I've weeded out of the tomatoes bed, and I don't know what to do with it. I know this would be too good to be true, but could I possibly put it on the compost heap, since it doesn't have seeds? Is it possible that the little nuts would cook out into something useful? Probably not, right? Every time I start to dump them out (I really need that tub), I think, "I can't put 'em here." Please advise.
Syb
A tubful of nutsedge!
I would spread them out in the sun and let them dry out really well, I mean really bake, then add them to the compost.
Woohoo! Wonderful! Have you done this? You sure they won't come back to haunt me?
I think after they are cooked and composted they wouldn't have a chance.
You know the nuts are edible, right? Like eating the heart of your vanquished enemy.
If you happen to have a dark-colored pickup sitting around, spread them out in the back of that, and bake them up good. Otherwise, use those black nursery pots with saran wrap over the top.
Oh, I'm loving this picture. Not perfect revenge, but what a good start. I'm on it! Thanks.
My two cents worth, I have been weeding mine with a hoe very old school but I recall my parents doing the same thing so that is how I plan to keep up with it ..If I had a tub full of that cursed stuff I would put it in a black plastic garbage bag and fasten it securely and let it be , should br hot in that bag to killed even nutsedge....Just taking a break from weeding myself but break time is over...
After looking around for something black to lay them out on, as birdlady suggested, and coming up empty, I'm really liking the idea of the black garbage bag. I can just see them choking
/smothering.
I can see I really need to reign my emotions in. I knew I had hostile feelings for this weed, but my level of vitriol is ridiculous.
Grits, I don't see how you can get to the nut with a hoe. The ones I get out, I have to go down as much as 10 inches. To begin with, though, I forked over my 4X8 foot raised tomato bed, and picked them out very carefully, trying not to break the runner. Inevitably, I missed a few dumb nuts (STOP IT, SYB), and am digging them as they appear.
Realbirdlady, do you think the garage bag option will work?
I think if you put it in a couple of 5 gallon covered bucket and let it sit 3-4 weeks, it will be a juicy mess. That juice is fertilizer, and the "mess" should be safe to add to the compost or just throw it out in your woods.
I just gave up on the idea of getting all the nuts out so just keep them down I was told that if you can keep the plant from flowering for 2 years it will die.this seems to have some merit as Oklahoma State U. advises to cover with black plastic and let the sun do the work..Anyway me and the hoe are keeping up it is a wide blade field hoe that once belonged to my FIL and he died in 86 so it is a really good hoe ...
Lots of murderous ideas. Thanks all.
I'll have to put it all on hold until next mid-week. Got a call late last night from my oldest grandson, telling me he and his family are coming in today. Three baby girls so sweet they just drip sugar off them. He's off Monday, so they won't leave until late that night. Of course, we'll have the usual 15-20 others here for Sunday dinner, so count me a real lucky fella this weekend. God so blesses me!Weeds can wait, family can't.
So, off to the kitchen...................charge!
Bless you Sybil, you have such a great attitude!!
