OK, I desperatly need some advice. I have spider mites and some little critter that spins a small web around the ends of branches. Both started on my dwarf youpon and is now in my crepe myrtle, pentas, conelflowers, artemisia, salvia greggi and some others. I've tried using simple soap and water ( I use a soapy sponge and literally wipe both sides of the leaves and stems). It kills what is on the plant, but not things that show up later and on big things like the crepe myrtle I can't get everything. I really don't want to do anything that will jurt the butterflies because last year I had diddlysquat and this year I've got tons (admirals, mourning cloak, sulphurs, graystreaks, and one huge monarch. But I'm at the point where I am loosing plants. Any advice?
How to get rid of pest in my butterfly garden
The best advice I can give is to put it out on the id form for the bug first...then ask what will they do to your plant. Make sure you tell them you don't want to harm the larva of butterflies also.
I have found if I don't spray or worry much, nature takes it's course by means of lizards, etc. If plants are really stressed, I will clip off the bad parts and inspect for the good bug larva then destroy the pieces I cut.
Thanks. I really have tried to let nature take its course, but that's why I have such a bad infestation now. Of course, last years drought and record temps didn't help either.
To control spider mites, spray weekly with liquid seaweed mixed with liquid molasses in a water solution. It will actually help feed the plant and kill the spider mites.
Stephanie, what proportions? I have a spider mite problem on my garden phlox. I blame poor soil and watering.
I also have such bad aphids on my honeysuckle. The birds are enjoying them, but really they are taking a toll on the blooms, which were profuse this year. I have to go find some hungry lady bugs.
I just mix 1 oz of liquid seaweed into one gallon of water and spray. For aphids, I spray soap water. I just squirt some liquid Dove into a spray bottle. You can also add a dash of ammonia or rubbing alcohol. Fill with water and spray away.
how much molasses do you put in the gallon of seeweed mixture
No more than 1 oz.
