How about this weather?

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

How about this weather? My thermometer is reading 95 degrees outside and about 106 in the greenhouse.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

95 with 6% humidity here in West Texas... I would give anything for some rain. Have had some in sourrounding areas but absolutely nothing here where I live.

Mcallen, TX

94 here, but thats normal for us. I thought we were supposed to be warmer!

I was feeling a bit warm today, then the news guy reminded me, last year we had 10 days in April over 90 degrees.
Hang in there, Tammie.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pardon me for intruding on you nice Texans but here the ground is sodden and I'm in winter clothes. Our high for the day was 51. Pass me a blanket!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hrmpfh Pirl! Can I tell you to find sympathy in the dictionary? LOL I'd love a few weekend days like that so I could get work done outdoors. Seems we go from winter to this.

We are mid to hi 90s which I could live with if the humidity did try to match those numbers. Pollen & mould has us choked up and when it is this humid one cannot breathe. We are seeing an incredible assortment of bugs. And flies ~ like where the heck are they coming from!?!!

So, Dean ~ do you still have plants in the GH? I have to move everything out by now. It will roast plants and that is with the shadecloth in place. I use my greenhouse in summer for hanging laundry. Two 20 foot retractable lines. No bird poop or bugs or rain ( although it seems to have quit raining already). On a sweltering day, I can dry two to three loads a day.

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, podster, I still have a few plants in there. I just noticed there was a weather thread should have posted this there. I need to get stuff out of there and I got a shade clothe too.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pod - very funny! My goosebumps must make you jealous!

Have fun in the sun!

LOL, very jealous here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I heard on the news tonight that today was the hottest day so far this year. Oh yay! NOT!! We're supposed to have a "cooling trend". That means highs will be in the upper 80s.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You know Pirl ~ when our heat is so intense the colors fade on the flowers and the leaves look as wilted as we feel, you will get even with us.
Your bloomers will have those brilliant colors and your vegies will surpass ours by leaps and bounds. Then, I'll be jealous.

And I'll get even when y'all are freezing your hineys off next winter and we are savoring those 51 degree days. LOL

Not to worry. DH says climate is what we expect but weather is what we get.

Dallas, TX

Its really dry here and the ground is hard as a rock. I am going to dig up my new plants and put them in pots.So much work and so much water. I hate to see my water bill! :(

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pod - As I drifted off to sleep wearing my winter PJ's, and socks, lying atop a blanket with a comforter over me, I did think of you! It's so wet here that the duck's are carrying umbrellas. I like your husband's idea of climate versus weather. We will have those brilliantly colored blooms and we will have our vegetables but you do get two crops, right?
Winter was fabulous and I was out at least one day a week sans the winter jacket! We had more warm days than I ever remember for "winter".

Sylvia - just a few weeks ago we had that really dry soil. March was exceptionally warm ("hot" to us) with many days in the high 60's and low 70's. Then the irrigation guys arrived to turn on the system so all was well until the skies opened up on Monday and it hasn't stopped. I wish you enough rain to keep you happy and enough sun to make the plants grow and bloom.

We did love our two weeks in Texas back in 2003. We went from wonderful sunshine to ice/sleet/rain and accidents galore on I 35. The people were very friendly, Austin was great fun (loved the Bob Bullock museum and the wide cattle driving main road), along with the Riverwalk, the Alamo but especially Luckenbach. That was a hoot! The countryside was lovely and the German towns were charming. All the food was terrific. "A good time was had by all".

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Pirl, I can't believe you all's weather is so cool. We have been a little warmer than normal here, but it sure is cloudy today. Hopefully, will get some rain. The garden needs it.

Talihina, OK

We had a good 1 inch rain on Monday so we are okay there ,today is very muggy but not so bad as to stop the garden work from getting done I talked to a friend yesterday in Ca. and it was 47 degrees and pouring rain and all the while he is talking I am sitting outside with a nice cool breeze blowing...

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm enjoying the temperature, but not the humidity. It's still better than last summer when, as Lula said upthread, we had 10 days in April above 90. We could use some rain, but at least it is in the forecast for next week.

Can you tell I'm desperately trying to stay positive???

Carla

Dallas, TX

Thanks Pirl! I need your type of weather for my Hostas. I got other plants that been in the ground for years and they are flopping I really think my soil is still bad from some Cedar mulch I put down a couple of years ago.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

At least the heat and humidity brought us a bit of rain this evening!! Not much, but some is better than none. Also supposed to bring "cooler" temps. Yeehaw!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hurray for your rain. Wish I could send ours down to those who need it. We're due for three more days of rain next week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Slyvia - would you consider using reconstituted water crystals for your plants? I do and they respond well.

Stephanie - I, too, prefer cooler weather to hot weather as does my husband.

Pirl, I used the the reconstituted water crystals for the first time a few weeks ago. I was kind of worried about it, but a gardening buddy told me it was safe. I put it in the ground and in the pots. I think I might have put too much in my Mouse collection and the other minis, it appears to be coming to the top. What brand do you use? I got mine from a friend and it come from the UK.
I still have a problem with my soil. My Heleborus, Bears Britchs are are just falling to the ground. My five Japanese Maples just dried up, I had the plants in the ground for years. I could just cry!
Anyway your garden is Marvelous! So is you picture. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm so very sorry for your losses, Sylvia. It truly is a heartbreaking experience to lose your plants.

I think my crystals are Soil Moist, available in nurseries and Walmart, etc. If any came to the top you can spoon them off into a pot you'll use to save another plant. Their value lies in being at the root area so the roots will have access to the water in the swelled up crystals. Funny but I have some in with my Mouse Ears as well.

Jack is a good sport!

I'll pray for rain for those who need it and hope you are one of the recipients.

Dallas, TX

LOL Jack is a good sport. He seem to be a lot of fun too.

I used a version of that in my raised beds and large containers last summer. I was cautious about using too much as I've read stories of exploding soil. I honestly can't report success or failure because I can't tell it is there. But then last summer was grim droughtwise so it may have been far worse had I not used it.

C'mon Sylvia ~ nothing ventured, nothing gained. If your soil is like so much of the soil in Texas, you might consider building raised beds and add this to the bed before you plant your lovelies.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ms Pirl ~ looks like your husband is practicing for life in the south... and he will fit right in. We might just let him bring you too. LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's always best to reconstitute it before using or else many of us tend to use much more than is necessary.

Ha! At 80 degrees we seek the AC! We're both chicken with the heat. We did enjoy February in Texas.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I have used watersorb for years. I buy them in the 50 pound bags because we use them to make cooling ties for soldiers also. I have a front flowerbed in the center of the yard that I put them in several years ago. It currently is the only part of my front yard that is alive and shows any green other than the shrubs just in front of the fence.. I keep those watered. The daylilies and mums are growing along with the snapdragons. The grass is growing there too! LOL all grass in the yard is pretty much dead.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Interesting company. I have to check who I bought my crystals from.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Tammie ~ that is the company I bought mine from. I really liked their site, it is very informative. I didn't buy as much as you do but I recall them being a bit slow on shipping the order out. After all, they are in Arkansas if I remember. About the time I was giving up on it, it arrived. Of course maybe I was impatient as usual. LOL
