Tropical Parula

Mcallen, TX

I set out orange halves for the woodpeckers and this little beauty from Mexico and beyond showed up. It had been reported at Bentsen State Park and I actually went out there looking for it, unsuccessfully. A few days later it's in our backyard. It's a Tropical Parula and the RioGrande Valley is its northernmost range; but not too often, infact rarely.

Thank you Stephanie. Like so many, I have too many hobbies and not enough time. Realbirdlady, this isn't the firs time I look for a bird only to find it in our backyard. Another one was the National bird of Costa Rica, the Clay Colored Thrush, previously known as a Clay Colored Robin. If you want to see this bird you have to come to the Rio Grande Valley...nowhere else in the U.S.

The Valley is host to many wonderful birds and butterflies that we don't get to see in other places in Texas or the US.

Congratulations! I saw a Northern Parula in Huntsville last weekend, but have never seen a Tropical before. That is a fantastic photo.

That is one that made me get out the bird books. Thanks for sharing the photos and the knowledge.

I have a favorite brother in law that is a fanatical birder so I've cultivated a moderate interest. I will have to ask if he has ever
seen the Tropical Parula. They have traveled far and wide for birds including the "Magic" Valley and farther south. Kristi

Just so long as you post them on the Texas forum, then I'll know where to find them!
