We put 4 Silkie eggs under Poozie, one of our Barred Rocks. One egg got broken early on and another disappeared a couple of weeks ago, not sure if they broke it, or what happened. So she had two eggs left. One hatched Saturday and the other Sunday. The parents are Blue Silkie mother and White Silkie roo. One is a Naked neck bowtie. Odd, but neither seem to have the puff on the head.
Two Silkie babies hatched
So cute
Looking forward to seeing how they look in a few weeks.
They're so tiny! It is indeed odd that they are not poof-headed. I don't suppose that could show up later...?
Sooooo cute! You gotta love silkies , poof or no poof!
Are there strains of poofless SIlkies?
Some have just a little "wild hair" instead of a real poof! Dont know why but I have some that just never developed the really nice poof hairdos or poof under the eyes or chin! So yes, I guess their poof is just another trait that most desire but end up having to breed and or buy with! Just hoping for the best, when ordering or buying, doesnt always give the best results!
There are bearded and beardless silkies. The ones that you can see their face they are called beardless. And your right Eifaula some have nice full top knots and others don`t.I know all show quailty silkies have all kinds of hair on there head and face and some have to cut it so they can see to eat and drink. This is some of my babies born in Jan and they came form the same flock. You can see the difference in the faces, one is bearded and the other is not.I perfer the bearded
Could you see these characteristics from the beginning - as hatchlings?
No
A bitsy Showgirl!! Too cute :)
I didn't know you could get a Naked Neck from two fully feathered parents. I thought the NN gene was dominant. May have to re-think things here...*G*
catmad the Naked Neck came from a Naked Neck father, the mother however was not Naked Neck, she was a regular Blue Silkie.
All our Silkies have poofs on their heads, a couple of the Blue ones have smaller poofs, but the roos, (both white, one naked neck, one not) have huge poofs. The Naked Neck baby seems to have a little bit of a poof.
Here is another picture, we let the momma out today with her babies for a while. Momma was dust bathing, so she got some dirt on her babies.
Awwwww, I love em all poof or no poof, necked or dressed, LOL!!!
Okay, I misunderstood. Whew! I thought both parents were Silkies, and that the Naked Neck Bowtie refered to the chick:)
I'll get it right, eventually.
No problem catmad, I probably could have worded that better to begin with.
So far they are energetic little things. We don't have any chick starter so I scrambled some eggs this morning so they get more protein. Need to get chick starter, we have some duck eggs under another hen that are due to hatch in a little more than 2 weeks. We didn't plan on hatching ducks, but had another hen that was set on sitting on eggs and kept trying to steal the eggs from this momma, so we decided to hatch a few ducks so she would stay on a different nest.
