Plant ID

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I know this is a long shot, but . . .

I was at a local nursery and they had this plant. They didn't know what it was, but the price was 39.99. I wondered if anyone recognizes it?

It has the large roots much like a philodendron.

Looks like a Bird's Nest Anthurium, Anthurium hookeri.

Thanks. I didn't get that one, but I might get one. I really liked the plant, but I've learned to research first and buy later.

They're fairly easy to grow but they're more an epiphyte so you're better off not having them in soil. A good loose free draining mix with plenty of water/humidity.

You know, when I lived in zone 4 and had 90 days to garden, I thought even one zone up would be heaven. Now I live in zone 9a and it freezes once or twice a year and they can be hard freezes and last a couple of days. I think zone 10 would be heaven. You know how that grass is always greener . . .

Since I have discovered an interest in philodendrons, I think they will need enough special attention to hold me for a while (not to mention those 6 epiphyllum cuttings I have to baby along).

I appreciate the information. Someday I may get a Konjac.

I'm in the equivalent of zone 12b or 13a. But sometimes I think zone 13b would probably be better, LOL. The big trouble with higher zones is you start getting a lot of common plants that won't grow for you, they need a lower zone climate.

Yep, I miss the heck out of a lot of common plants I used to have tons of (poppies being the one I miss the most).

I like a lot of different types of plants but one of my favourites is orchids. It's amazing just how many of them won't grow here. As a result of killing quite a few I now check out plants for tolerance and have learned to be happy with the range that is available. Because, there's lots of plants I wouldn't be able to grow if I was in a different zone. It's the old basic lesson of life, change what you are able to change, but learn to live with what you can't.

No, I have bird's nest. That's not it.

There's a number of Anthuriums that are called Bird's Nest Anthuriums, Anthurium hookeri being one. The one in the photo looks like the one commonly called Anthurium hookeri "Ruffles". But it's considered a hybrid so not strictly A. hookeri. I have a couple sold to me as A. hookeri, but they're definitely not and I don't know which species, or hybrid. Another Bird's Nest one I have is A. plowmanii. But the one in the photo is definitely a Bird's Nest Anthurium, the only arguable point is which species. That would take a close, expert examination.
