Magic Mountain x Earth Angel seedling

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

This is the first flush of a seedling that has stayed small. I love the small size of the brug and the petite blossoms. It is the first of a trio of seedlings of this cross that are going to bloom for the first time this spring.

The nice thing about this little brug is that it is blooming in the full sun. The blossoms are waxen and strong. This pic is of the fourth day they are open in the full 80+ sun. Still going strong. I would love some smaller brugs like this. Much easier to shade than six foot tall trees. (I'm aware that I have some weeds in the pot. I took the pic while weeding.)

This caught my attention since I had this cross growing as well, but because of health I neglected to do some things, one being to darken the labels. Suddenly, I had labels I couldn't read and many seedling and cultivars became noids.

You'll have to keep us posted on this seedling. Is this its first flush ever or first flush for the year? How did it do in last year's heat? Most of my Brugs went dormant from late spring through early fall. I like the flower form. It would be nice if the color were darker. Maybe in later flushes.

I do hope the color darkens, too. This is it's first flush. It grew out in the full sun, since it's first trip outside. It was in a tiny two quart pot for two years and that may be what dwarfed it. What I'm really loving is the sturdiness of the blossoms. Today they are still not showing any sign of wilting.

Is heat dormancy when they don't bloom? Mine under the elm trees grew and bloomed all summer. NOL, Painted Lady, Rosamond. Carolina Gold bloomed all summer and lived in the full sun on the patio, but it didn't have flushes, just the odd couple of blooms. I did have several that grew ok but didn't bloom.

I'll keep you posted on the little plant.

Very pretty!

It's almost as if they had gone into winter dormancy. They stopped growing and lost all but the smallest leaves. Later in the summer, the branches began to die back — most all the way back to ground level. Because they had also died back due to freeze damage in the greenhouse when we had that rolling blackout last winter, I don't think they had recovered enough. Summer dormancy was the last straw for the majority. I lost well over 75 Brugs total last year — all Brugs that I had purchased over the last 4 years.

Have you ever had or seen spring bloom plants blooming in the fall? That out of season bloom is due to summer dormancy. It's how some plants cope with the Texas heat. The plants get confused and think its spring again.

Yes! I have seen that. It does make sense. A coping mechanism. After hurricane hike, within days the pear trees were all blooming in response to the high winds.

Gosh I'm sorry you lost so many. It's so disheartening.
