A Texas Brown snake?
No, I'm not being sarcastic :0)
Try google image search for Texas Brown snake. Sorry, I can't get a link to work.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

I think I have those. Are they almost pinkish when they are younger?

I think they can be a range of colors, tho they have the same markings. A lighter line down the center of it's back with a broken line on the sides of the lighter stripe.
I always think to myself, that the lighter line looks like it has been 'stitched' onto the snake by a darker color.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

How big is it?

Not big, they are garden snakes, bug and insect eaters. Like garter or ribbon snakes.
If you try and pick them up they have a bad attitude and will strike at you...it's all a bluff.

I found another one on the other side of the house outside the garage. And he acted just like that.
