Do you believe in the germination fairy?

Arlington, TX

I do!

Underneath literally thousands of plains coreopsis and prairie verbena there are some others, like these dozens of snapdragon vine babies.

This all seems good until you realize you just spent 3 hours pulling up cowpen daisy seedlings and you are not even close to making real progress. I am afraid to turn over the dirt because the surface is covered with their seed.

Now where did I toss those R. hirta stems last year...? Wonder if they will be tall enough to see the flowers.

This one makes the whole thing worth while. I have tried two batches of seed to get another one of these and this year I have one! Salvia penstomoniodes

You are doing great Cheryl.

Yes and no Josephine. I am so happy to have the S.P. but my beds are useless until I get them weeded out. I have plants that need to be moved and new ones that need to be planted but all is on hold until clear out the areas. Do you think this is the result of a mild winter? Or, because I got tired of the heat, skunks etc and didn't do any cutting back in the fall?

I think it is a combination of many things, it all just came together right, count your blessings girl!!

Here too ...
I have seedlings popping out every where ... ohhh

This year we'll going to have the BEST gardening season ...

I normally don't pull out the extra seedlings, unless they are on a path ...
I am a "squeezer gardener" and I also believe in "living mulch"=all of those squeezed plants will shade the ground = less weeds and cooler soil = less bending down ...
I found out that the weaker plants don't make it anyway.

In the picture you can see Cosmos

Yes, I believe. These poppies came up in the crushed granite of my stone walkway. I just couldn't make myself pull all of them up. The blooms started to open day before yesterday.

This poppy is called "peony poppy" because the bloom looks similar to a peony. They are annuals and bloom only for a few weeks. I have a "ton" of seed left from last year and will have plenty this year barring some disaster like a high wind that would prevent them from maturing. A DG member shared the seed with me when I first joined and I didn't get around to planting it for a year but there didn't appear to be any diminished germination percentage. In our area, seed must be planted mid-October to do well. They come up very quickly and have very pretty foliage all winter long. Then in February really spring into action. This past fall, I got busy with other things and planted a month late and those haven't done as well. But the volunteers came up "right on time" in my stone walkway and the edges of the driveway and the wonderful rain has made them thrive.

I passed out packets of seed at the RU at Syb's house last year but you weren't there.
