Is it too late?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Due to health issues, I wasn't able to prune my muscadine grapes. Now that I'm able to do it, I see they're already starting to leaf. Is it too late now to prune them? Should I just wait until next February? Or can I still "safely" prune them now?

Thanks for your help!

I don't grow grapes, but I do know that you can prune a vine anytime you need to.

I pruned my neighbor's honeysuckle today. ;)

In past years (during the summer), I've whacked off a vine here or there, but have never whacked (pruned) grapes to the extent where they're almost down to nothing. This is why I'm hesitating.

But I guess I'll just try it and see what happens.

Thanks!

A good rule of thumb for pruning vines is WHEN IN DOUBT DON'T let them be I see lots of wild Muscadines in the wild that have NEVER been pruned and they have grapes anyway..

Ah but did your neighbor know that you were pruning it ,Steph?

I only pruned on my side of the fence. I hate that honeysuckle and am thankful that only one of the 4 she planted survived. (I had no hand in the others dying btw.)

Muscadines I wouldn't prune now- not brutally- or u might just prune every other one to see if it is early enuff for them to recover before summer heat...

Thanks so much for the info and input! No, I haven't pruned them. I got busy doing something else today, so I didn't "get around" to it.... and that's a good thing!

I will leave them, except for the ones that are going where I don't want them to go (into the trellis for the pink jasmine and up into the fruit trees that, admittedly, I planted too close to the grape arbor).

Thanks again!
