Unexpected Ginger

Agawam, MA

Hi all,
I had a leftover piece of ginger root that I used for cooking that I didn't want to throw out so I stuck it in a pot of soil. To my delight, it sprouted and I now have a 2' plant. I just repotted it because the roots were about to burst out of the pot - my question is: can I now cut pieces off the root to use in cooking without hurting the plant? Sorry if this is a basic question, but I have never grown ginger before. Thanks.

guess you could. I went to a green house the other day and he was cutting up a "store bought" ginger to propigate it. Would be the same principle? He just dumped it out of the pot, cut the top back and replanted the pieces that had an "eye" on them.

Does the ginger root you buy in the store have blooms when it grows? Just wondering because I bought a nice one that was already sprouting at the store.

Me too. We love fresh ginger in Oriental cooking.

i never get to see the ginger to bear any flower as i use so much of it most of the time. the planted ginger does not have the opportunity to mature and bear flower. maybe if i let alone, it will eventually bear flower. one thing nice about planting the ginger, one has alway fresh supply of tender and not so pungent ginger.

I Betcha anything this will flower(eventually). I'm going to try this also!!! I would imagine the noded eyes in the tuber are leaf nodes..feeding them maybe with a slow release fert could induce a healthy plant, don't you think so! have fun with this! Ramblin' Rose

Eyes... they are quick to sprout. grown like regular ginger plant. the leaves and stalk, u can also flavor soup or make stock. nothing different from when we use green onions to flavor food. the stalks emits a delicate and not too pungent ginger flavor.

one thing good about planting ginger is it is always fresh and young. not like the dried up ginger u buy in the market. it seems they are over matured, and flavor is way too sharp.

planting ginger give u fresh and young supply of ginger most of the time. be sure the pot u use is wide enough, to give room to allow the rhyzomes to grow. they do multiply in no time, specially during the warmer months. :)

Eyes..it will get about 4 feet tall and make a wide clump eventually
