Whaddya Say - Smells

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What smells do you love?? Hate?? I am focusing on non-garden scents, but if you want to include that you can. We did do a thread a couple of years ago on that but we have some new regulars.

Love:

Gasoline - go figure. Weird, but I do.
Vanilla.
Cinnamon.
Certain women's sweat - sorry, cannot be more specific. It is what it is! ^_^
GARLIC!!
Wet soil.
Wet leaves.
The air when it rains.
Ozone after an electric arc. (Remember I am an EE!).
Salt water.

Hate:

Love: Jasmine, Gardenia, some viburnums(judii, Mohawk, carlesii), most roses, BASIL!!, honeysuckle, mint.

Hate: Some viburnum (dentatum, dilatatum), datura, creeping chameleon (gross!).

Smells that most hate that don't really bother me:

Yes, I hate the smell of lemon pledge! That's what lemon balm smells like to me.

Always amazes me how strongly scents can trigger memories.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

They all make "sense" to me! (LOL)

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

love: fresh cut hay, campfires.

hate: cat pee, tomato sauce

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Love memory smells!
Yum to lemon too and lily of the valley♥

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Tomato sauce? Interesting.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh yeah I LOVE the smell of coffee

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

it tastes better than it smells (tomato sauce)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't like the smell of preparing fresh tomoto sauce, when someone is crushing the stewed tomatoes, hated that smell when my mom was doing that

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Big yes on fresh cut hay, and sometimes regular grass freshly cut smells real good. Love hay-scented fern.

Aside from Oriental lilies, which I often find too strong, the other plant that really fills my garden is clethra.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Add the air on spring days like today!!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

How about ambivalent smells-- the smell of garden sheds. Like the familiar smell, but it isn't really very nice.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Love basement smells. And bungalow or country house smell.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - not dirty or flooded ones, though.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i loved the smell of my hockey equipment - some pieces i had for 10 to 15 years - i never washed it - the smell just reminded me of hockey - even now i will open the old equipment bag for a wiff - it also gave me a little extra room in the corners and taking face-offs :)

Thomaston, CT

Same with an old baseball glove....leathery & sweaty, but nice......

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yup!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)
