Alert ROSE LOVERS: ROSE ROSETTE disease is in Dallas

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I'd like to educate my fellow rose lovers about this horrible disease called "ROSE ROSETTE"
It started in my garden two years ago and I HAD to remove lots of my lovely roses.

I just found out that more than 200 climbing roses that are around the Four Season Hotel in Las Colinas, have been infected. The hotel is only one mile from my house.
I was at NHG last Sunday and many people are coming to the nursery with infected branches. Definetely this virus/myte is going air-borne in the Dallas area.

At this point there is NO CURE, the only thing to do is to REMOVE the infected plants.

Please read this two articles:

If you identify any infected plants report the problem right away at the Dallas Estension office at: 214-904-3053

A member of our gardenclub (whose home is part of a tour this spring) had to take out all her roses from this disease. YUCK!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Where was her garden located?

Arlington, TX

I passed by a row of knockout roses planted along a strip of median in Carrollton and the roses sure looked like the ones you have pictured here. What a shame they were lovely last year. Of course if we continue to have a drought planting roses in that kind of situation is a bad idea anyway. Hopefully they will remove them if they are infected so it can't spread so easily to nearby yards.

thank you for posting about this. I haven't seen any in my roses...but, will be looking and also will be on the look out on other roses that I see

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a miniature rose bush that looks like it might be affected. There are more thorns than usual and it is very red. I also have salvia, pansies, mums, lantana, and turk's cap in the bed, do I need to worry about it spreading to the other plants? I have other mini roses in the flower bed across the sidewalk that I just put in this week so I'm going to spray those, hopefully they will be ok.

The disease will not spread to other plants.
Please report to Dallas Extension Office that you found the disease in your area.

Luckily, I have not seen that yet in the area I live in Irving.

I'd like to update you on the Rose Rosette infestation at the Four Season Resort in Irving.
Thanks to a member of Dave's Garden (also a Master Gardener) who went to the resort in person and start to talk to their landscape people and teach them about their diseased roses ... the roses are all gone.
It took 400 hours of work to remove more than 300 roses ... it is soooooo sad to see all of those roses gone ... but 50% of them were almost all dead.

I really appreciate all the help I received from Dave's Garden members, from identifying the disease to solve this matter.

Now let's wait and see what will happen in my garden.

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

Am I understanding this rose virus correctly --> roses that are affected are turning that deep red color on the leaves..??...

I had my 7yr old antique climbing roses [Pinky] die off last year... but the leaves just turned yellow and died off. Not that deep red.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

no is more than that.
Have a look at those two articles and pictures:
http://agrilife.org/citybugs/2011/07/rose-rosette-disease-transmitted-by-a-mite/
http://plantclinic.tamu.edu/2011/07/13/rose-rosette/

Some of my roses didn't turn red at all. They just started to make millions of branches ...

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

Ah... thanks 'drthor'.

What I remember most about my Pinkies were the sudden, yellowing leaves that just dropped off leaving bare branches. I don't remember the millions of branches forming. I was able to save at least one Pinkie that I cut waaaay down and then transplanted to a different location. It's doing well. I had all the dirt & mulch replaced in the original location after several months and bought & planted new antique climbing roses. Fingers crossed.

The Four Seasons Resort, here in Las Colinas, replaced their 400 + infected roses with CROSSVINE plants.
I did the same 3 years ago, when I replaced the infected Marmaid Roses on my back porch columns.
What a coincidence ?

Now I think I am Rose Rosette FREE ... I think
After my neighbor and the Four Seasons did remove all their badly infected roses ... I have not find any infection left on mine>
So far so good ...
