Wisteria question

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been wanting to plant wisteria for a while and finally have the bed set up to do so. Now, which do I want? I've noticed that there is a wisteria florabunda and a wisteria macrostachya among others. I'm wanting my wisteria to grow as tall as it wants, but not too much width, and I want blue or lavender. I know these can be real barn eaters, but I've got good height in this particular spot. What are the differences and what variety are you all growing? Also, the exposure descriptions for wisteria usually just says "sun". Now by that do they mean Midwest sun or Texas sun (mostly sun, but some shade at mid-day will be the exposure I have in mind)?

I'd like to know if wisteria can be pruned regularly to shape to a particular form or to keep smaller? I wonder if there is a forum for vines? I have heard that wisteria takes several years to bloom after it is planted. I wonder if it is a long lived plant, would hate to nurture and shape one for several years to finally get it looking really neat and have some size to it, and then have the thing die knowing my luck :(

I don't grow japanese or chinese wisteria, but I do know that they are long lived and they can be shaped to shrub or tree shape, however it takes a lot of vigilance since they are such fast growers.

I do grow American wisteria, Wisteria frutescens, since I am trying to grow only native plants.
This one is not as rampant and blooms more than once a year, however it is not as showy as the others.

FrillyLily and frostweed, thanks for your quick responces. I see that wisteria frutescens is available in blue or violet, so it is a good option for me.

I will check through the forums and see if I can post this question in another forum.

when I moved to TX 6 years ago I was so excited because I finally could grow WISTERIA (which it didn't really do well in Florida).
Growing up in Italy, I remember how I was lookig forward to the smell of Wisteria announcing the arrival of spring.
So I did plant 2 small plants on each side of my new home.
It bloomed on the second year ... just beautiful.

well ... is started to sucker every where ...even 8 feets away ...
It started to move the rain gater .... going around my roses strangling them ...

A friend of mine said that she saw a video on tv of an old house in TX crumbled by a wisteria vine ...
It took me 3 years to finally get read of this monster ...

I never realized that in Italy the Wisteria grows around brick/stone constructions ... while here most of the houses are made of wood.

Here some pictures of my Wisteria in Dallas

The following pictures are from the "CASTELLO CARRARESE", Este (near Padova).
Padova is in the north of Italy, close to Venezia (Venice).
At the beginning of May they have a flowers fastival inside the wall of the castle .. which is amazing ...
One year I was lucky to be in Padova visiting my family during the festival.
Enjoy

My goodness! What lovely photos. So clear and color sharp. That does look like a very old wisteria.

I know that Italy has some incredible growing climates. That all looks like such lovely produce. And what a lovely photo of your mother! Thank you so much for sharing. She just looks lovely!
