I need some help to identify these seedlings that have self-sown themself this year.
In this area I planted both Zinnias and Sunflowers last year.
I DID break a few seeds from the Sunflower heads ...
To me the seedlings look really similar.
Any help will be appreciated.
I am not familiar with Zinnias, but since they and Sunflower are of the same family Asteraceae they must resemble each other. Probably one of the differences is in the thickness of the leaves.
i will take a stab at it looks like sunflowers to me because of the whitish rib in the seed leaf ,pull one up if it is a sunflower it should have a longish white tap root,which I don't think the Zinnias wil; have
They look more like zinnias to me, unless you planted something other than regular sunflowers there. Also, zinnia's are popping up just now and sunflowers are not in my garden. IMOH>

I have lots of sunflowers popping up too, mine are from last year's sunflowers.
I didn't have time to pull any of those seedlings out ...
I don't want to waste them ... I want to find a good spot in the garden for them ..
They look more like a Sunflower now ...
FYI I feed the birds during really bad weather during the winter months and come spring I just plant a handfull of the leftover sunflower seeds ,..They make really tall plants that are just loaded with flower heads ..Just the cheapskate coming out I guess...
I just love the sunflowers, so cheerful and so good for the wildlife, you can't go wrong with them.

Last year I did notice that the "disgusting ... yuk yuk" leaffoted bugs loved them.
They left my tomatoes alone ....
So everybody was happy ...
The butterflies love the sunflowers and the LF bugs will feed on them when they can. "yuk" for sure.
Today I replanted these mystery plants.
The roots are NOT really long ... just regular ...
The leaves look a lot like a sunflower ... they are drooping down ...
Soon ... we will find out ...
I'm betting on zinnias, Im terrible at plant ID but Im still going with zinnia. Lol. My Rocket larkspurs are coming up along with a lot of natives I won't sow my annuals until the natives have died back.
My mystery plants are looking more like a SUNFLOWER now.

They look like the smaller sunflowers from the black sunflower seeds I put in my bird feeders. Thanks to the birds, I have them everywhere! Many are blooming here already.
The only sunflowers I seeded last year where the huge Mammoth.
I am hoping for very large plants ...

Those Sunflowers grew almost taller than the Crepe Myrtle.
I have collected the largest seed heads and kept for myself, the others will be for the birds.

This year they were a show-stopper of my front yard.
I think the secret was to let them grow by themselves !
I just couldn't believe they were Sunflower seedlings in February !
They're beautiful! After seeing your original post, I decided to start my own sunflowers and have just LOVED them! I grew Lemon Queen, but more recently planted some Mammoth Grey. Hope they produce before it gets too cold for them.
I dont see any of my Zinnias appearing, I do have an overgrowth out there that could be the problem. not enough or water.

it is too for Zinnias to germinate in Dallas ... especially with no rain ...
Zinnias germination temperature is 70-75F. I think I threw my seeds in my garden at the end of February this year.
I just tossed some zinnia seeds a couple weeks ago and they are germinating along with the cosmos. That was the week we had a lot of rain. As long as I keep them damp I dont have a problem.
DrThor I am sure I threw them out earlier this year during spring when it was raining. I got so much over growth out there I cant tell what out there.
Jeez Sylvia they could be anywhere in there lol. I always let my native annuals playout before I sow cosmos, zinnias, or sunflowers. I sow them all summer long. Because they are annuals sometimes they die.. I just throw out more seeds. You mite want to give it a try. Keeping them damp will keep the temps down, by evaporative cooling. Im not able to start mine as early as drthor because we get colder temps later in the year here. They are cheap Id have to give it a try
My wild flowers were beautiful thos Spring do to the rain. However, some of my tomatoes died from it. Oh well!
1lisac ... lol ... I dont know what that stuff is with the tiny purple flower, some one gave it me at a plant swap. Its all over the place! Then there is these vines ... another gift? LOL my neighbor hates me, she thinks I am responsible for the crab grass. tch tch.
DrThor those are the biggest seed heads I have ever seen. They look like pillows! :)
I think it is time for you to move again Sylvia...you need to dig what you want and leave the rest like you did before! LOL!!
I let all most all of the volunteer sunflowers in the garden and wound up with a sunflower forest..The Cardinals have laid claim to most of those so this morning is the day most all get cut down //They have turned dark brown and are just plain ugly

Zinnias are native to Mexico, so sowing in heat
wont bother them.
The only thing is, right now we are in the canicula,
and traditionally, things shouldnt be planted now.
