Possible Winter Blast from the North

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

The weatherman here in Dallas just said that we could possibly have a winter blast week after this week with artic cold temperatures, ice, snow, sleet, etc. And then he said that we might just have lower, but not artic temperatures. Just the same, I know that I'm motivated to finish my hoop covers, put on frost cloth and get the blankets ready just in case. Now I think about it, I got nothing to cover except for my cole crops still hanging around from the fall.

I will bring in seedlings(pots) and other potted plants. Not sure what I can do for all the little plants coming up in my beds.

I have been uncovering some beds that had heavy mulch in the form of Sweet gum clean up so will just watch the daily forecast and then act ,since most of the mulch is just pulled aside and left nearby for cases like this ,other than some still very tender coneflowers there is not a lot to get hurt YET ..Oh well what it is is what it is ...

Not "he is never right", all of them are hardly ever right. But I do remember one time when they all were right, last January right before the Superbowl. I believe that I will be ready just in case they are right for the second time.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

yes I will be ready too ...

Praying he is WRONG !!

Talihina, OK

Right or wrong it really don't matter it is what it is ..I only have the Camelia that has been damaged once my Ma nature and anything else is good to go as far as the cold goes Have seen the Dafodils peaking thru the snow a lot of times but as usual my garlic will likely get stunted bad Hmmmmm that has happened so often I am to the point of kinda expecting it LOL

Grits
My DH thinks like you, if it's meant to happen then it's going to happen. I believe that you can influence what's going to happen somewhat by making a few alterations, or in this case, take some precations.

OOPS, I meant DW, not DH in case ya'll were wondering..

I had a feeling that winter was going to be late this year. I heard the same forecast. As a rule I dont plant out if there is a freeze in the forecast, I wouldnt plant out this early anyway but I did by some "Walls of Water" so Im getting prepared. We had snow last weekend today was beautiful. Only in Texas....

Talihina, OK

It was 31 here this morning so that is well , mid 60s forecast for later today with 70+ tomorrow I think 70 is a signal to get busy planting..I know for sure it is time to drag all of the Achemenes down from the attic and give them a drink and see what happens

Talihina, OK

It was 75 here yesterday but just at dark the wind switched to the north and it is now down to 42 but that is still way above freezing ..My journal says that our last frost last year was May 4th which is about the latest I have seen since moving here in 01

I'm afraid that the cold wind you're having there today is on it's way to Texas. What do your weathermen in OK say about the weather for next week? It's already cooler here today than yesterday, when it was in the 70's, and I believe it will be back in the 70's again this weekend.

Talihina, OK

They are saying it is just a typical spring pattern warm/cold warm /cold

Talihina, OK

well now it is a frosty 26* morning here in Bubbaland this morning but a bright sunny morning and the coffee is good and the fire is warm LIFE IS GOOD

I didn't look at the temp this morning, everything was covered in frost, not just the usual frost prone places. However, I don't think it set on the leaves too long. Nice and sunny now, nothing looks 'nipped'.

Coffee sounds good, going for a second cup :0)

When I watched the weather report on tv last night, there was no mention of an artic blast coming next week. In fact it looked like the temperatures next week were going to be in the 60's and 70's. If surgeons got it wrong as often as meteorologists do, there would be bodies piled up every where.

Arlington, TX

No frost here but it was and is nippy. I was not looking forward to a cold snap and will continue to pretend its spring.

Hrp50 you do have a way with words. LOL. Even when you are serious you make me laugh. Sometimes I think the weather reports are a ratings thing too.

I saw the temps through the end of the coming week but not after that. However, a couple weeks ago the forecast did a 180. In the morning it was one thing and by that evening completely different but correct.

If I make you laugh when I'm being serious, that might be a problem. You remember the story of the little boy who cried wolf too many times and when the wolf showed up and he called for help for real, no one believed that he was serious and came to save him? Maybe I should add a disclaimer to each of my posts to advise if it is a serious post or not, or I might get eaten by the wolf; I’ll bet that some readers wish that I would.

Arlington, TX

Are there wolves in Carrollton! :0)

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Nobody wants you to be eaten by a wolf, that I can assure you. I realize you're being serious its just that you are funny about the way you express yourself. So no disclaimer is needed.

Not that I'm aware of, but a few coyotes and one bobcat have been spotted coming out or going in the greenbelt a few blocks from my house. That's why we don't have a stray dog or cat problem in our neighborhood and it could explain why the wild rabbit population seems to be down a little, unless the rabbits have started using some type of birth control.(ha)

Talihina, OK

Lots bigger chance of you getting eaten by a wild hog LOL How was the LOL as a disclaimer?

Arlington, TX

Now don't get me started on the birth control issue! Still trying to figure out how that has become a political topic. Can we all agree we are ready for spring? Even if there hasn't been much of a winter here.
BTW those hogs are scary.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Mother nature can be cruel at times. Now you have me being skeptical. Was in the process of dragging my banana trees and plumeria stalks from the attic to plant today!!!!!! In my yard and area, I'm seeing a lot of signs out there that spring has not almost sprung, but leaped ahead. Hostas and ferns are sticking their noses in the air already, bradfords are blooming. Hard to imagine it will be a prolonged cold snap if any.

However, there was that bizarre first day of spring 3/21/2010 with 8 inches of snow to remind me.......................

I saw a robin yesterday. Is this when they normally come thru? I cant remember. In 2010 I thought the winter would never end but I didnt realize it lasted that long.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Winter 2010 didn't last that long, but it was brutal in January and February. The spring snow was one of those perfect storm situations - a rare blizzard thing that just happened out of nowhere for the Dallas area.

Arlington, TX

The past 2 winters have had the coldest temps since I moved here. I am glad for the relief this year. Do signs of spring include all the insects I see out and about! One bad thing about the mild weather I guess.
C

I saw a grasshopper nymph while out poking around yesterday...I think that a record breaker for me.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Snow in March seems like a pretty long winter to me. But then the fall of 2009 was cold and it rained constantly. 2010 is the year one of my gardens developed what I think is Stem rot. (fungal). Dont know how any disease got there but the conditions were definitely right.

Talihina, OK

Tonight is the meeting of our garden class and I have the making of a raised bed as a topic ..It has been fairly warm here all day with T storms in the forecast Class starts at 5 pm so don't need much more time without the nasty stuff it is to be an outdoor class this evening . But just in case I do have an alternate lesson planned ..keep your fingers crossed for us ...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It was overcast here most of today, but this afternoon the sun came out. It was beautiful today, high of 72 with projected 80 this week. I agree with you Cheryl, I am pretending it is spring. I drug all of the plants out on to the shop deck so I could sweep and clean up the area inside where they were and prepare to pot up some seedlings etc for RU. I figured most could stay out there until a frost is expected.
