A lot of my brug babies are in under lights. BIG LIGHTS. Anyway - they are growing by leaps and bounds. I've already removed the biggest leaves to conserve space but will they be OK if I continue to defoliate them all winter? I do leave some of the smaller new leaves on but as soon as they get to a certain size I lop them off. All of my big brugs are still outside - hopefully for another month. Will have to move to a hotel when they come in.
Removing leaves.
Hi Liz,
I've removed leaves on mine during the winter because I wanted them to get stalk height, not bush. I am sure it won't hurt to do that. I do know that in Iowa, I should have just cut them back and let them grow again because when I put one outside that I had grown tall, it was not strong enough to handle the wind. One nice thing about brugs, they recover from almost anything you do to them and in quick time.

Thanks Brugie - I'm not particularly worried about my Frostys etc. It's the smaller Europeans that I don't want to lose. Their stalks aren't as beefy as the locals. They travelled a long way to get to me and I want them to see another summer. LOL
Liz
How did you get them shipped to you? Seems to be a problem getting brugs from Some of the companies overseas. You can email if you want.
Shirley,
Liz lives in Canada..not sure if they have the same restrictions as we do.
Gloria - Brugie - plants from Europe are arriving as before. France is coming in about 10 days. Going to push my luck with Germany this week.
BUT -- leaves - Glory - can I keep cutting off the bigger ones and leaving the new growth? I'm talking Rosenrot, Herrenhauser, Citronella, etc???
Liz,
Are you talking about rooted cutting you have just received?
I don't remove all the leaves of the new Brugs in the green house...like you just the larger ones. I don't have a space problem but we do tend to get spider mites and that help keep them down...the less leaves on the plants the better.
Glory
What a good idea!! I had spider mites really bad on the Frosty Pink, so I removed the biggest leaves (they looked awful anyways), sprayed the remaining ones and now they look much healthier.Since bringing them into the green house, I've been removing the leaves as they yellow, but I may go ahead and take off some of the largest leaves to cut down on the mite problem.
Okay, hang in there.......I have another question. Seem to have a lot of them these days. If plants can be shipped to Canada from overseas, can someone from Canada ship them to us? I have a friend that might be talked into helping get some plants next spring.
I've received plants from Canada without any problems. All the soil has to be removed and a label on the outside saying what's inside the box, botanical AND common name(if known)and say also "all soil removed".
Hey Brugie,
Are you talking about me? Anyway I can help just let me know.
D.
I just received a small envelope from Brugcrazy in Canada with some cuttings and it took 11 days to get here. I sent my envelope to Brugcrazy a week before she sent hers and it still hasn't arrived.
I hear from some that the mail is a lot slower.According to the postmark on some seeds I just received it took 7 days to get here where normally it would have taken 3 days.I have some cuttings going out today and will keep my fingers crossed that they make the long journey.
