I tend to get ahead of myself sometimes this time of year...so anxious to get going. What can be safely planted this time of year? I love roses...and I want to do quite a bit of bulbs...the summer blooming ones....am I too late for those? too early? just right? what, if anything....is everyone actually putting in the ground. If you aren't putting anything in the ground...what are you doing to your beds?
what is it time to plant?(not veggies)
The weather is pretty random. so it's hard to tell, but generally trees and shrubs, woody stuff. I'm doing a lot of transplanting now, smaller stuff like grasses and herbs. Pruning although it's getting late for most things.
As far as the beds, scavenging leaves for mulch, and I reset all the compost piles to be a little more systematic. Added some trellis and borders.
Some veggie stuff I won't mention.
is it too early to plant coneflower bulbs? I don't have any shrubs that I am going to plant this year...or trees....a few roses...no grasses....I want an herb bed. We just broke up the veggie garden yesterday...as soon as I get over this virus bug that the grands were so sweet to give me over the weekend I will get out there and start getting all the grass, etc. out of it. I want to add daylilies, lilies, daisies to one of my beds.....in another...the one that gets nearly all day sun I will put salvias, etc. I know it will be awhile before I can get those in the ground.

You can plant coneflowers now, they are hardy, and this will give them time to get some roots going before the big spring growth.
thank you!
Roses!
Yes! Was looking online today at chamblee's....making my list and dreaming
Chamblee roses are amazing !!
I normally have them shipped to me. They arrive in 1 gal pot just perfect.
http://www.chambleeroses.com/
they are amazing! I will hopefully be making a trip there within the next month. they are a little over an hour from me.
ohhhh
I bet you will fill up the car when you go there ...
good luck !
I am certainly going to try,lol
Lizzieshome52, don't forget the sales tent!
The boneyard?? Have gotten good stuff out there
When our youngest son was going to Tyler Junior College several years ago we would get our roses Chamblees' and other growers', and bring them home from his visit. You don't want to know how many rose bushes you can put in a Plymouth Grand Voyager mini-van!!! I think our biggest haul was 40 rose bushes. Our friends loved the $2 plants we'd bring home for them....
I'd believe ya !
I'd believe you too!! I see you live in Buda...we come out that way some...like to go to the outlets at san marcos...go to the wimberly trade's days....hubby likes to go to saltlick bbq and cabela's....I hit the nursery there at buda last time..can't remember what it was called....it was late in season though so they didn't have a whole lot that I needed.
I had promised hubby that this year I wouldn't buy many roses...but, ya know.....I think I am visualizing a whole new section of roses in my front yard.........and hey...he is is going to finish the fence in my back yard.....so, it is possible it might need a few too....
Bought the wife 4 rose bushes for Valentine's Day from HD, but she needs 3 more to fill the empty spots in the fence-line. Momma likes Wimberly Trade Days... Double knee replacement last November knocks me out of that...not that I wanted to go anyway... Salt Lick's OK, but over-rated. I smoke a much better brisket... Cabela's is GREAT... Kid in a candy-store....
Trying to think of nursery around Buda, but nothing jumps out..
Chamblee's is great for sure and alot of times if you drive down 155 or out west on 64 there are places set up that have roses for sale too in the front yards.
I'm gonna be watching for the road side ones since I lost about 5 bushes this last year :-( or figure out something else to plant in those spots instead LOL
I think the nursery was on Manchaca road....that name stuck in my mind for some reason. hubby loves saltlick...it is ok. I go because he loves it. cabelas holds nothing for me...i go because he loves it,lol. but, I do love wimberly trades days...love a good flea market and hubby does too. He likes to junk as much as i do thank goodness.
Mibus...I have never stopped at the roadsides...didn't know where the roses came from...and usually when I go to chamblee's I have a specific list. I try to stick to the list,lol...otherwise I am not responsible for how many roses might jump into my suv,lol
The house on 64 had the name of where they were grown and it was a local person but no idea who it was now but it is one that did survive the heat LOL
I also try to hit 69 in sept as sextons has a wagon out front with roses for sale and mea's used to but Chamblee's is still good
ahhh. didn't know that about sexton's as I have never bought roses in sept. I guess I have ended up sticking pretty much with Chamblee's because by and large, their roses are the ones who have survived texas weather for me.(that is, after I learned what I was doing, lol).
do you go to the nursery between tyler and bullard...can't remember the name...the really large one. I used to go New Summerfield...but I think Davis and maybe one other is all that is open now and they do not carry the perennials that I mostly seek now. And of course, gas has gotten so high, trying to consolidate where I go(so have more $$$$ for my yard). We always make a trip out to Independence and to Navasota, but, not sure about this year. Between gas $$$ and having so much to do here, just not sure we can get away.
I have also found a lady in Sardis that has a daylily farm and she is not exhorbitant on her pricing...she doesn't have a lot of stuff but some different than what I have.
I make my pilgimage down to Blue Moon Nursery outside of Edom right around Mother's Day. Well worth the trip. Then, of course, on the way back I stop at Chamblee's. No need to buy Mother's Day presents for me (although three years ago I got a zero turn lawn mower that I absolutely love, it's name is Fred). Just give me money for my MD nursery crawl, LOL! Oh, and I have to visit the bird house guy in Edom. Very expensive, but if I save up I can afford one every three years or so...
ahhh....how could I have forgotten about Blue Moon....yes...that is a must here also. last year, I went too early and had to make another trip(oh darn). HA HA HA. I so agree on the mother's day money...and my birthday is in may also. :0). Last year, my son bought me a new birdbath...daughter bought me a new hanging birdfeeder...red metal with leaves and bird doodies on it....they so know what their mama loves, lol.
hee hee....Fred. Love it.
love looking at the birdhouses. every now and then I buy a birdhouse if I am out somewhere and find a rustic one...hubby used to build them for me though, so hard for me to spend the $$$$ when I know what the real cost is,lol. Hopefully, he will get a shop built and set back up this year or early next year so he can get back to doing that.
Gosh, Blue Moon twice in one year! A luxury! =)
actually...I usually end up going about 3 times...but, it is only a little over an hour for me and we always do other things. I usually hit them in june also...that is when the blueberries are ready there at the blueberry farm in edom
was in tyler yesterday, so decided to make a run to Chamblee's: Came home with:
Dick Clark, Wild Blue Yonder, Lemon Fizz, Red Home Run, Milano Kolorscape and Heirloom. Next trip I plan to pick up about 6-8 more and then that will be it for this season. I have never tried to grow any of these so will see how they do.
Good luck with those. I saw a photo of Dick Clark the other day. I looks like a lovely rose.
I'm planting out strawberries today and tomorrow. Rain may be coming our way, so I want to plant as much a possible while all is windy but dry.
Maybe I can leave work early today????? I think I feel a migraine coming on.....
HA HA HA. I hear you. I have never tried to grow strawberries. This year we planted some thornless blackberries, 2 plum, 2 peach and another fig tree. I would like next year maybe to add some strawberries and blueberries. Our weatherman told us we could have between 4-6 inches so thinking I may wait to plant anything just in case.
The local co-operative agent told me to treat strawberries like annuals with a 2-4 year lifespan here in Texas and I would be much happier. So that is what I am doing. I'll just be thrilled if I can get them to berry-up!
I was reading that the other day...about the 2-4 year period...so, I guess you need to plant new ones each year to avoid any interruption.
This has been a great thread. I have been looking for mutabilis rose for a hedge row and found them on Chamblee's website. My dh noticed and ordered a gift card for my birthday last Saturday. Sunday I went to Chamblees and brought home 8 mutabilis, a seafoam, and an about face. Thanks for sharing.
oh...so glad you got your rose(and more!). I can't wait to go back...there were so many I wanted to bring home with me. I am thankful that chamblee's is only a little over an hour away.
I can almost hear them whispering my name! =8~O
I have to finish planting all those roses waiting for spots first. Then I'll know what I "need" next.....
yea...that is why I only brought these home....have to get them planted and wait for the next whisper, lol
ahhhhh.....just pulled up the mutabilis....I believe that one will have to come home with me...maybe more than one...

Beautiful! I remember seeing the Dick Clark when I was there. I was so glad I had a list of what I wanted.. otherwise I could have never made up my mind. I'm very excited about the mutablilis.. I needed something that wasn't too fussy for this hedgerow. The about face was an impulse buy from the bargain roses and the seafoam is for my "white garden."
I have to have a list...otherwise, like you...can't decide and then end up buying way too many. I bet your "white garden" is beautiful when all are in bloom.
I was looking out the window at my yard this morning...my eye fell on one of my birdbaths...last year I had lantana around it...but...i think after perusing chamblee's site (again)....that I might relocate those and surround it with Rouletii (AKA Hwy 290 Pink Buttons). I used to have this rose at our other place and I loved it...once it started blooming it just bloomed it's little rose heart out.
