Ferns

Does anyone know how to divide pot bound ferns. I tried once with no success. Lost all. I have four big __?_ferns on the porch. I never did cut them back-just picked out the brown fronds. Look like wood ferns, but?

Sybram,

What type of fern?

Fern dependent here, but many of them like the Boston fern and similar types, just take a long serrated bread knife and cut them into large clumps, like in half or quarters and repot. Too small they may not survive. Cut off most of the current growth to force root growth first.

If they are like the common wood ferns that die back in the freeze, you might try and separate the runners. The new growth on these usually comes at the tips of the runners. I dig mine up and trim of the dead wood at one end and replant them in the garden. I'd trim off most of the growth if they are still growing to force them to sprout.

Send a pic- some aren't as grateful as others and then again you may have simply picked the wrong month to repot, chuckl - like that year long month last summer...my asparagus fern I try to keep as rootbound as possible- Boston ferns I kill, so,
