I am looking at plants on ebay and I see some say SP1. Is it a hybrid? I thought that SP meant species?

What does SP1 mean?

the way this person writes it makes it seem like an abbreviation for what specie it is, because it says "believed to be..." i'm thinking SP1 is just a reference to species.

more info, with pics. i really think it is standing in for a species' name.
It is a genetic term but I am not exactly sure what it means. Perhaps it is the first generation of a particular species.
When specimens are taken in to herbariums they're given a number with the name of the person submitting it. If it's an undescribed species then it's given an identifier until such time as a formal description and naming is carried out.
Depending on the herbarium, the identifier can be something like Ipomoea sp. 1, or else they use a geographic location like Ipomoea sp. Ramingining (most common here), or a characteristic of the plant like Ipomoea sp. Fine leaf. Sometimes they put the name of the collector. This identifier remains until some taxonomist pulls the specimen apart, formally describes it and publishes it.
exactly! you did a good job explaining tropicbreeze! the specie isn't identified yet. that would be a plant to add to the Plantfiles once identified.
Thank you! I was hoping it wasn't a hybrid. Someone beat me to it but I contacted to seller hoping to get one.
That was a new one to me too .. Thanks for the definition. Love to learn new things!
