Has anyone had any experience or luck using corn gluten for weed control in the vegetable garden? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Corn Gluten for weed control
I haven't used it but was considering it for burr grass. As a result, I saved this information in my journal if you are interested. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/170655/
I don't know how you are planning to use it in the garden but it is a pre~emergent for weeds. If it is used after the seeds have sprouted, it will act more like a fertilizer. You will also need to be very careful if you plant seeds rather than plants. It will prevent the seed from sprouting also.
Hoping someone with hands on experience will share more knowledge. Kristi
There's also a timing issue - must be applied just before or as target weeds begin to germinate to have the desired effect, and it needs to be applied more than once to be suppressive. As podster says, apply it too late the weeds get fertilized. With our wild weather it's hard to guess when to apply it plus it's an expensive product to boot now that corn is a bio-fuel, never mind the GMO aspect to it.
homers, I have had good luck with corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent weed control for bermuda grass under my Lady Banks rose hedge and along the alley side of the hedge, along the fence line. It can be pricey but it was the best non RoundUp option for me to control the bermuda grass and not affect the roses.
I sprinkled a good cover of meal, then topped with either newspaper or plain brown wrapping paper and wet it all down good, then topped with straw. It's worked best along the alley because we don't water there whereas we soak the Lady Banks frequently so the bermuda is still an ugly issue in spots. But one does have to repeat the process and crawling on my belly under the rose hedge to get everything just right......well let's just say I've gotten pretty good at ignoring a certain amount of persistent bermuda.
As garden_sass mentions, some folks have a vehement opposition to using anything with the word 'corn' in it. I was soundly scolded on another board for championing this method. "soundly scolded" being an understatement. :-|

LOL ~ I have yet to understand how being chastised serves to educate or influence anyone.
That attitude meets with stubborn resistance from me every time even though I know they may be right.
Scheesch! I do my very best to be kind to the earth and my tiny little square of it. If I use a bit of corn meal once or twice a year to control bermuda grass, I think it's okay. Like alcohol and chocolate - all things in moderation.
