We are having a insect infestation under our row cover this winter. Somehow the row cover got riped this fall and we now have an infestation. I've been unable to identify the inspect on-line and a normal organic bug spray is not killing it off. Any idea what it is and how to get rid of it?
Insect Infestation
Euuuuwwww....I'm sorry, I can't help to ID them, but Euuuwww.....Will keep fingers crossed for you that they are some sort of bennie insect that suck aphids or something. A bless in disquise would be nice, eh?
the people on the insect and spider id forum are really good at id'ing things. maybe post pic on there
I sent it to Horseshoe. Hoping he'll know what it is.
Are those insects doing any damages to your crops?
Howdy, Folks...
It's hard to tell any colors on them, partially due to my monitor and partly to my wimpy eyeballs!
They look almost like a type of fly, almost resembling a termite, eh? And one seems to be missing a wing like it has broken off making me think they are coming out of or going into another stage of growth. Wish I could help. Sorry.
Susan, how big are they? What I can make out is six legs, non-segmented body, backward-facing wings. You sure have my interest up, wondering what it is.

I initially thought winged aphids because the wings are back set. But they look too big in the pic, hard to judge size though.
Here's some images, they come in all colors, sizes and shapes. https://www.google.com/search?q=Winged+Aphids&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=3IoHT8jDMKT5sQKhj-WQCg&ved=0CCAQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=555

My vote is aphid even though the wings look pretty long.
Are they only under your row cover or in the ground also? If just under the cover I would shake them out and let the cold kill them... Do you have an Ag. agent in your area-or a really good nursury- if you do-show them- they should be able to ID.
Ray_der-Phan - Thanks for the link.
It looks like they are winged aphids. http://bugguide.net/node/view/8767
I'll go out and verify this morning if they are. We've thrown the row cover twice because of the number of bugs, sprayed, and placed a new cover on. The infestation this week is not as bad as the last previous two. Normally it would have frozen here by now but we're seeing 60 degF weather.
They are definitely aphids. I found them on the underside of the remaining spinach we have in the bed. Not sure how I missed them the first couple of time.
I just did some winter cleanup in my flowers, and when I pruned dead leaves from my Columbine plant there was one live stalk that is covered with fat green aphids!!! And our temps have been way below freezing for ages. What does it take to get rid of the little varmints?
Lady Bugs ..
Just wait and the "good bugs" will come to take care of the "bad ones"
That's the thing about Winged Aphids. They either are around before an infestation takes place, or they develop wings because the colony has gotten so big and need to look for another area to take over.
Aphids are loving my peas this year so I broke out the Neem. Most are dead now :)
