12 hours of below 32

Not to shabby little test I did here under the tree they all came out just fine 2 days worth of hard freeze and even a bloom

Sometimes damage does not show up for several days, I hope it stays healthy.

Clermont, FL(Zone 9b)

Trees do wonders to hold in the heat as long as it is not super windy. I'm about an hour north of you in Clermont and I did nothing to protect my in-ground yard brugs. We also had at least 8-10 hours below freezing and the brugs that were under the canopies of old live oaks trees had no damage at all, yet the ones totally exposed had major damage to the foliage.

Let's hope that is our only encounter with freezing weather for the rest of the winter.

My 3 Brugs' leaves are drooping, but the buds are holding.

They still holding Kay? Even though they looked good the next day they still lost leaves no stalk damage but was better than wrapping them. I usally cut them to the ground and mulch they come back fresh and they stay nice not leggy.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes, they are holding, but drooping more - it was warm and humid yesterday, so I don't know if they will perk up or not - doesn't matter - they will come back this Spring.

Good to hear they have survived. I once left one out by mistake when we had an ice storm. It was coated in a sheath of ice about 1/2" thick. The little brug actually survived! It was my favorite brug for many years. Sadly it did die in a hard winter freeze in spite of all the cover I gave it. I now only have two little brug cuttings in a window sprouting roots at the moment. The drought this past year has been terrible on everything and I lost almost all my plants.

I feel for you in Texas Florida's getting to be bad in the spring you might go 1.5 months with out rain and all this intense sun. Brugs are water hogs to begin with. I cut mine off at the ground and mulch they shoot right back in the spring. One that was in the ground I ended up putting a green house up and its inside gave me a little show this morning

Tammie,
I sympathize with you. I lost over 70 Brugs in 2011, some to the rolling blackout we had in late January and the rest to the heat and drought of summer. This was most of my Brug collection and of course it included almost all of my multi-skirted Brugs. Those Brugs that did return have each put out several shoots.

If they survive the winter in my greenhouse, I would be glad to share what I have left with you. I will be in pins and needles until winter is over. The house builder took forever to build our new home and I didn't want to move my greenhouse over to the new site until the house was finished and we had moved in. We are half in one house and half out of the other, but it is too late to move the greenhouse and the distance too great for the temperature sensors I have in there to transmit the information all the way to the new house. I just hope ECOT doesn't decide to cut our power in the middle of the night again this year.

I discovered ages ago that ice is a great insulator. Frost sensitive plants, which would have otherwise died in freezing weather, have survived without any damage in ice storms. I know some people have had Brugs survive in the ground in zone 7b, but that is unusual. I lost all but one of the 4 Brugs I had in the ground and I live in zone 8b. Audrey Hepburn survived because I covered it with a plastic tent and had 4 strands of Christmas lights and 4 - 45 gallon garbage cans filled with water surrounding the plant. This year, I had my ranch helper dig it out and put it in a pot.

I lost all but 3 of mine in the freezes of 2011, too. The ones I have left are 2 single pinks and one single white.

LOL it would be nice to see the snow didn't get to go this year had to stay home. Figures if I had went we would have had frigid weather and I would have had damage again. After all this cold Gail strides on with bloom after bloom

Very Beautiful Gordon and Dana.
My DH and I started to go to Salt Lake City to see my mother today. I got a little frightened and turned around d/t a blizzard. It rained yesterday and this morning and turned cold this afternoon and is still snowing. I am resting on the couch, looking at gardening forums and dreaming of spring.

I came from Conn. I can remember the ice storms how beautiful they were and deadly they would close the roads if you worked for hospital or police you where ok to travel any one else was going to jail if you got caught on the road. They have been getting the snow now too. I have family in Salt Lake too just sent them a big box of puzzles looks like they are going to get a chance to do them.

Danna my son lives in Con. and you are right they get lots od snow but they love it, in fact he bought a weekend, vacation home but not where it is warm, it is in Vermont at the foot of a Ski mountain.
I took this picture from the back yard this spring.
