October 20 Journal

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Good morning everyone. It's clear and cool here but is suppose to warm up somewhat today. I have so much to do today that I can't spend much time on the computer this morning.
I got the peonies, mum, and asters I got at Powell Gardens last Wednesday planted yesterday morning. Today I hope to get the clumps of yellow daylilies planted. I'll probably just put in a handful of starts and throw the rest in the ditch at the end of the drive to make it prettier. I've wanted to do that for years but there has always been so much brush, etc there that I didn't think they stood much chance. Now we are getting at least part of the area cleared(Jack & Shad removed a large red cedar & the surrounding brush a couple weeks ago)so I'm going to have a go at it. I'd also like to plant some around the mailbox post like my mother-in-law did.
I get out of doing much washing today because there is only enough detergent for one load. I did about 4 loads yesterday so there isn't much laundry anyway. I could do the bedding today.
I noticed yesterday that the green bean vines are totally dead. I didn't get any green tomatoes picked yet but may today. I have tried ripening them in the house one year and ended up throwing out most of them because they rotted instead of ripening. But we did eat our own tomatoes for Christmas dinner that year and that was really nice.
We're going to have to spend a lot more time taming Jared, the new goose. He definitely is a gander. But he isn't at all tame and he is making Marsha less tame every day. So either he gets tamer and Marsha goes back to being our very pettable goose or Jared is Christmas dinner. Maybe Thanksgiving or sooner. I wasn't looking for a mate for Marsha when he showed up and I'm not all that keen on the idea now. However if he will get tame and pettable and Marsha returns to her old behavior he can stay.
I still have some bulbs and rhizomes to get dug too. I'll only keep a couple or so of most of the canna. The rest I'll either give away or just leave in the ground to become humas and fertilizer for the next crop. I have about 6 pots of canna still blooming in the house now. Those are the ones which can't be allowed to dry out during the winter or they die. It's kind of neat to have them blooming in the winter!
Have a great weekend everyone. GOD bless and keep each and all of you & yours.
