can I mail daff bulbs in freezing weather?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I bought a bunch of daff's for my sister, can I mail them now? My temps are in the high 30's and high teens?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Joyce -

You could try it and make sure it is marked perishable - or plant them and then dig them up later and send them to her when the weather is better.

Joyce - where are they headed?
I would say as long as they are wrapped in newspaper pretty well, a flat rate priority box would get them there in 3 days? I would do it in tomorrow - temps look good across the country through Wednesday :)

Thank you Steph, I did mail them and wrapped them in that cotton stuff they use at Christmas that looks like a blanket of snow...rofl. They made it fine and they have been planted, so hopefully they have a beautiful show this spring. Boy it has been really warm down here, how about MN?

45 yesterday - today and through Tuesday...Wednesday sounds like sub zero and snow. Finally, January :)
No snow on the ground, birds singing, sun shining - if I didnt know better, I would say its late March. Wouldnt surprise me if buds on trees start popping by Monday

Same here we have been as high as 66. As much as I love it I sure worry about the plants getting tricked or winter coming late with a really late spring. Those I hate the most...rofl.

Same here. In like a lamb...out like a lion...the lion can stay in the jungle!
We were 1 degree away from tying a 135 year old record on Thursday.

It has really been strange to say the least. Course the warmiest days are when I am at work. We have also been really dry this year. I have watered some pots and a couple of small trees that I am overwintering. The poor ski resorts on the east coast are just empty, no snow to speak of. I am surprised I haven't seen some bulbs pop up. Hope we have an early spring and it stays nice. The last couple of years it has been cold almost to memorial day.

There were actually piles of snow in parking lots into JULY last year!! Of course, they were HUGE piles of snow that were all plowed to one location, but still...July?!?!

I noticed last weekend when I was out in the garden poking around, that my daffs were starting to pop up. I am thinking that the weather is very much like March. For now, I will take it. I keep remembering 2 years ago when we seemed to have a high in the teens all during December.

I am having mixed thoughts about starting my garden spring cleaning. Typically I leave everything until Spring so that the birds have the flower seeds to carry them and also I can tell where things have been planted. Well, the flower stalks have pretty well been picked clean by the birds and I can still stake where things have been planted.

Ive thought about getting out there and cleaning, but I have found too many things in the house that need attention from my last of during the gardening season. I do have to get out there this weekend and grab some JoePye seed for trade. Cant find the grocery bag I already have of it...no idea. Guess I have more cleaning to do in the house. Either that or I am just so organized Im too good for myself ;) At least I know its not in that "don't forget where you put it" spot...I can never find anything there either.

I know I have pulled out things that I thought were weeds, only to figure out later they were not.....

I am itching to get out there though. Last year, with the way things went with family and such, I was not able to get my Spring clean up done until May and it was so much more difficult in May to do it than in March.

Been there. Only it was Fall when I did my spring clean up.
