Dahlias?

Can dahlias be grown in my area NW of Houston? I dearly love the myriad of colors and types but have yet to have any success with them, of course our weird weather lately probably isn't helping.

I would think in the spring and in the fall.

I have never known any home gardener in the Houston area who has grown dahlias successfully. I think it's our high humidity that discourages this plant. That said, there might be some cultivars that work, but I'm not about to spend any more money on this plant.

Thanks Leslie, I have suspected that the very short spring and the jump right into heat and humidity might be the bain of growing them but was hoping for better news.

Any special varieties? I know that the Dallas area gets pretty hot in the summer and probably more humid than where I am.

I don't remember the name .. I have many of them. I have selected a variety that makes a small flower (max 2-3") and 2-3" tall max.
I have a few dinner plate Dahlias too ... but I am too lazy to stake them. They come back every year.
They don't like the hot summer much, but they are beautiful in the spring and fall.
