Help with Castor Beans
I've grown caster bean. I'm in north Texas (zone 7). They are an annual. Need to replant each year by seeds. Easy to get seeds from flowers if the growing season is long enough. I've grown green, red, and purple. This year my purples were probably 9 feet. Two years ago I did green, they were 8-9 feet too. The more water they get, the taller they grow. They love sun. My reds were beautiful this year when they finally flowered. Even with our drought and not near enough water, they looked rather bad, but once it rained, they resumed growth and looked wonderful.
The stalk gets huge and needs to be cut down after a freeze. I leave the root in the ground and next spring it will come up without too much effort. Impossible now!
Greta thank you so much. I am hoping to have all 3 to grow. They really fascinate me as they are so beautiful. Thanks for answering. :)
Sandy, you might be careful if you have a pooch that likes to eat plants, those are very poisonous.
I don't have a dog right now. I couldn't take care of her when I was very ill last year and she died in a friends care. :( I sure do miss her. Maybe one day I will consider getting another but not right now. Thanks Josephine for the reminder.
