A lesson learned today

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

You know sometimes we gardeners try to save money; buy all the supplies ourselves and after spending all that plus your time, you could have bought the product already made and saved yourself a lot of stress and pain. WhiteFlowerFarm.com sells wire bulb cages but they are $24.95 each. That seemed like a bit pricey to me..After making 3 on my own today, the next time I will spend that money with them. My hands/fingers hurt so bad from working with tin snips, needle nose plyers, tack hammer, and whip stitching with thin wire,; it's a good thing these cages are going to be buried because it was a hard and painful job. From now on I'm leaving it to the pros! Just took 3 Advil and it's off to bed I go. Tomorrow is my bowling morning; hope my hands/fingers feel better by then.

I'm sorry you tore your hands up. Wire is no fun. Neither are sawbriers but about 10 years ago, I cleaned them off my shady patch. I have the scars to prove it, notwithstanding leather gloves and long sleeves. Luciee {;^)

lucinee..Thank you for your concern. I didn't have any serious cuts, it was the workout one's hands get using those tools. Guess I overdid it yesterday. Planted a flat of pansies(18 (4 in. pots)before I started cutting the hardware cloth. I'm probably getting a bit of arthritis in the hands anyhow. I can't work with gloves on. I can say I did it but won't do it again. I'll buy them the next time! Hey, we live and learn; sometimes to save a few bucks and find out it's not worth it. Let somebody else do it or a machine that is set up to do this job in numbers.

Volesbegone has bulb cages here on Dave's.

Wished I'd remembered where I planted those bulb cages! I'm so mad at myself for not making a plant marker for them.. Guess I'll never know until I dig them up. The jokes on me!

I'm the person who buys the supplies with all good intention but never gets to make the project! At any given time you can find "stuff" in my house I intended to put in the yard/garden last year or the year before, but am not ready to toss them in the trash (yet).

Cathy166...Welcome to my world of honest intentions! About 10 yrs. ago, I figured out that I am ADD..I start many projects and get sidetracked easily and never complete many of my projects..I am organized in my mind but not the actual doing it.

OMG, is that's what's wrong with me? ^_^

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

Amen. I honestly do try to over-winter my little plants indoors and invariably neglect to water at least one location all winter!

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Well, I had better go and start to clean up some neglected areas of my life....LOL!!

After I finish the watering.....^_^

Just in case anyone cares, I was in Costco this morning to witness their latest early spring bulbs: tulips, crocus hyacinth and narcissus. I'm holding off for more of the specialty items, like allium and fritillaria. And I promise to plant them before October!

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I planted some bulbs last year in February, and they came up fine. They were tucked away and I did not see them untill I did a thorough cleanup. They were certainly chilled enough.

Evelyn, I'm guessing your ground never freezes. If I miss the fall planting season, I have a long wait....

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Cathy ~ Sometimes it does, but not last winter. It was rather mild. Usually we have a hard freeze after each snowfall, but not this time. It didn't even snow that much, but the winter before was brutal.

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

Our 2010-2011 winter was also terrible. We had so much snow that you could not see around corners till you got into the intersection.

In October of 2011 we had a snowfall (not a flurry), which is fairly unheard of here. We had another light snow in January I think, and that was it. A mild winter followed by a strange spring where we had April weather in March and March weather in April. go figure....

ADD, huh? That is probably my problem aslo. I start things and do not finish them. That is why I used to like sewing because I could get to an end point with sewing. Besides, having three girls was a good incentive. Luciee {;^)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

You are trying to plan too far ahead and be ready for everything. ADD works, I quit because I have scraps left over that I can't figure out how to use em, and don't want to trash good stuff.
