Tulip Seeds

Dayton, OH

Some of my Tulips gave me some seeds this year, and what I'd like to know is what time of year does a person plant the seeds, and do you do anything special to them before planting them?

It most likely will not work, could very well be sterile....if it does grow, it will take up to 7 years before it flowers.

That's not necessarily true for all tulips. Hybrids won't work, but if they are species tulips you can grow them from seed. Try this link for info on what to do: http://gardenofeaden.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-grow-species-tulips-from-seed.html.

It doesn't mention how long until they bloom, but at our Botanic Gardens there are tulips that have clearly sprouted and bloomed from naturally scattered seeds (they're against an out-of-the way wall).

Thanks lisabees, but the link you put on here does not work. The Tulips that gave seed are Parrot Tulips.

Thanks Bleek, not to be nasty, but I hope you are wrong about the seeds being sterile.

Strangely, that link didn't work for me here either, but I found it again by Googling "tulips from seed". It has good info, but you might not find it helpful after all - parrot tulips are hybrids, not species. Sorry.

The problem is that there is a period after the l in html.

Thanks Doug, I just cut & pasted the url from the address bar and assumed it would work.
