wintering plumeria....

Larsen, WI(Zone 5a)

Since I recently ordered plumeria grafts last early summer from Florida Colors and I had to bring them inside my home because of the temperature being too low for these Plumeria, I've noticed that the plumeria trunks are beginning to wrinkle up. From my knowledge, it means they need water. Although since I moved them inside, I figured they would switch from growing to sleep mode. That is why I'd rather not water them for that reason. Is this wrong on my part or should I keep the soil medium around the rootball more moisturized?

This is the first over wintering with Grafted Plumeria, so I might not know how to handle my situation.

Please let me know....

Barry, I don't have to bring mine inside, but from what I've read, if you're going to let them go dormant you should cut off the leaves so they don't lose moisture through transpiration. If you're going to keep them in a sunny spot, theat them as a house plant...less water, but not dry.
Hope this helps until a more northern grower grower gets back to you.

In my region, I have to protect mine through what little winter we have--A short one. I do treat mine as house plants, I provide them with extra lighting, and water them so I've not a problem of seeing them drying such as yours. Any time we see signs that are out of the ordinary. That probably mean the plant is under stresses. I'll try to correct the problem before the plant get sicker.

I have to bring mine in, but some are in a solar room and others are in a garden room in front of the south windows, this is about my 5th year doing this. I also bought some grafted ones this year and none of the trunks have dried up except for two that had a problem from the beginning.

But normally I have never had a trunk dry up, but I do not let mine go dormant.
This is what I do and has worked for me:
1. do not sit the pot on a concrete floor, the cold sort of wicks up the pot, which is not good
2. since mine are not dormant, I water when dry
3. keep out of drafts from the cold doors, or too close to the windows, temps at night next to a window can really go up and down alot
I do lose a few leaves when bringing in from the adjustment but then they seem to grow just fine.
