question # 10005 - Brug pruning

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

My tallest brugs are about 5-6' including the pot. we've just brought them in for winter. I had talked about cutting them back to 3', but hubby seems very disappointed in that, he thinks that they would have a much better start in the spring if we leave them this big. Most have about 3-4 branches which also have forks on them. Would they put out more branches if I cut below the fork?
Of course, my goal is to get the earliest flowers possible while not giving on quantity too. I want to have a plant sale about beginning of May, and nothing would help more than if a brug was in bloom. If this were you, what would you do? Cut back, leave them, other....??? :)

It all depends on how you are going to grow them. If your growing them in the greenhouse...growing just a few for show and have many lil ones for sale...rooting them all in a single five gallon bucket?...Of course, I could be talked into prunning back a few trees as well. How would 2 large Isabella trees, large insignis pink, v.alba, v. cypress gardens, jamaican, Insignis Gold etc, etc sound....do you have a large truck or can you make several trips? Stalks are anywhere from a few inches in diameter and under. Some span about 8 ft in diameter as this is their first year up here. I have a few of my own pink hybrids as well of course if you like pink and or peach versicolor types. A wonderfully fragrant large white candida hybrid as well....

That's what I'm wanting to do, have at least one in bloom hopefully, and lots of babies.
I am working on plans to see if I can come down. Will email you in the morning after begging DH all night:) I've already talked to him on the phone, and it's probably
do-able. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for the offer, be thinking of which day is best for you!!

Unfortunately, nothing will be in bloom as I have torn all the blooms off trying to get seedpods to form. The end result, you will have to baby the seedpods as well. Most pollinated with some type of aurea pollen aka Butterfly pollen.

oh, I don't want to take your seedpods!! You worked hard on those!!! Do you have some without pods?

Tig,
With everything going on right now, I am scaling way back on how much I grow and how much I save for myself. If you don't grow them who will? Think I have some seedpods on my Double white as well forming. Versicolor peach, etc. Haven't checked to see if my other personal hybrids have taken after pollinating them last week, but chances are they have as well.

I would love to take care of whatever you so generously share. I'll email you in the morning with a 'yes' I'm sure.
I only hope I haven't started an earthquake here doing the happy dance!!!
