All of my Black and Blue Salvia died this summer. It was doing great in early summer but by the middle of August it was all dead. I had several plants in different locations around my yard. Not one still alive that I can tell. Is it especially sensitive to the heat or ???

Black and Blue Salvia
A friend of mine in Plano goes through this every single summer -- her Garanitica does great until late summer and then burns to a crisp and dies. Mine struggles in late summer, and struggled badly this summer, but I manage to keep it alive by watering it more than the other plants. It seems like the more direct, hot sunlight it gets, the more it struggles as the summer deepens.

I don't have good luck with them myself. Mine is in a large pot in part sun and I get very few blooms. I won't plant this one again.

It must be the temperature, then, because I had plants in all different light conditions, some direct sunlight, some in mostly shade, and they all died about the same time. They did so well in early summer and the hummingbirds spent a lot of time on them, so I hate to give up on them but guess I will.
I try to interplant B&B with shorter native grasses...it seems to provide shade to the root system so the tops may/do wither and die during the hottest summers, even with supplemental watering, but the roots are alive and well...mine are coming back up with green shoots now...
You go, Mary Ann!!!
I love them even tho the winter took all of mine!!
With this thread, how could anyone say they are invasive??????
Mine from the spring RU survived this summer in a pot in mostly shade but did not really bloom well. I was afraid they would be invasive in the garden but so far, they aren't even all that hardy!
I was going to ask a question about my B&B but I think you all have already answered it. Only a portion of mine is dying and when I try to cut the dead out I break one that is alive. AND, it is getting the hottest of the day sun. I wonder if I cut it down short if it will survive or will that cause it to die. I am going to send a picture of mine just as FYI. Any comments appreciated. The humming birds love it and at one time I had a Mother Humming Bird and Two babies. They came up while I was setting on my deck.
I don't have any B&B but I sure want some. I wouldn't mind if my whole yard was nothing but salvia's. There are so many beautiful colors.
Last year I planted 3 on the east side of the house (afternoon shade). They got huge. This year they tried to get huge, but the heat beat them down. I too thought they had died, but they are coming back and today I even noticed blooms.
Don't give up!
I did have a think layer of straw in that bed to help with moisture retention, maybe that is why mine did survive. Everything looked dead in that bed, but even the elephant ears are coming back.
