The Fall clearance sale just started, and runs through the end of October. The last thing I need are more passifloras, but I must admit I did some damage last night. I figure I'll worry about where in the heck I'll find room for them once they arrive ;-).
Just FYI: 40% off at Grassy Knoll Exotic Plants
I ordered several more as well. I have to remember to set my alarm for 3am next Oct. 1 so I can get first dibs.
I bought a few too nice plants gave up on seeds most are old seed and don't grow
Dbsmith2 and Danasplants, which plants did you buy? In addition to several passifloras (I seem to have acquired a little bit of a passiflora addiction), I also bought a native pipevine, with the hope of attracting the pipevine swallowtails to my yard....
Sunny this year I have had the best time with butterflys I have 3-4 different pipe vines here hate to see them ate to nothing but its all for the cause lol. They are everywhere playing chasing each other way cool Anastasia and P. Victoria I have quite a few all ready bought a couple off ebay a man fom NY was selling plants fledermaus and Pink Sangunotenta he also sold cuttings bought a few of those 2 crimson tears but it would not root and pur vida it seems to be rooting. Gail here is going crazy 5-10 flowers every day putting lady margaret to shame. Get a few more pipe vines once they find them there gone in no time. Hers one that had his cocoon on one of my cuttings just coming out drying his wings.
Yah, those plants go fast at GK! Almost everything (well, the more desirable hybrids anyway) has been gone for days.
I bought:
Passiflora 'White Wedding
Passiflora 'Thuraia'
Passiflora manicata
Passiflora 'Indigo Dream'
Passiflora 'Odette'
Passiflora 'Blue Velvet
As I was moving the passies into the greenhouse, I noticed that I might be close to full. Guess its time to expand!
Very neat pic Danasplants! Our CA Pipevine Swallowtails are picky and supposedly only eat the native Aristolochia californica. I've never actually seen the butterfly or the pipevine in person, but supposedly they are in this area. We shall see if I can entice them to come hang out in my little garden. P. 'Gail' has started putting on a good show in my garden as well...it's certainly a pretty one!
PassifloraCraze, I stayed up and ordered my plants at midnight right when the sale started, as I didn't know how fast they would sell. Did you manage to snag anything before they sold out?
Dbsmith2, it looks like you got a nice selection! Do they overwinter well for you in your greenhouse? How do you deal with pests in the greenhouse? I'm in zone 9b, and some of the plants I have might be a bit iffy here, so I'll lug them in and out on cold nights. We shall see how the winter goes. In addition to Aristolochia californica, I also got Passiflora 'Flying V', Passiflora actinia (we might get too hot here in the Summer for this one, but hey, it was on sale), Passiflora colinvauxii, and Passiflora elegans. If anyone has any experience/growing tips for these, please let me know.
I have several aristolochias and lots of passies, but not the ones you list. I use mostly beneficials in the greenhouse. I had an issue with scale on the Star of Bristol, so I ended up treating most of the plants with Bayers Advanced Tree and shrub while they were outside. I'll use predatory mites for spider mite control in the greenhouse, and parasitic wasps for aphids.
That's wonderful that you're able to use primarily beneficial insects! I'd love to have a piece of property big enough for a greenhouse someday...
It's fun, but lots of work. Of course, I think of California as one huge greenhouse, compared with the soon to be frigid northeast.

No, I was -days- too late by the time I realized they'd had a sale. By then, I had already purchased Passiflora digitata-serrato x seemanii and Passiflora "Raspberry Strudel" from Jim Nevers (Passiflorista, on eBay) anyway. I have quite limited space and have managed to turn most of my dwelling into a pathetic greenhouse of sorts. The neighbors surely think the pink light from the windows has something to do with drugs. (Of course, it doesn't. It's just some LED grow lights trained on seedlings and full-grown plants upstairs.)
I'll keep your strategy in mind for next year. :-)
Still on the hunt for Passiflora macrocarpa (the purple flowering plant - not P. quadrangularis). :-)
Craze, have you contacted Arghya Gardens about the P.Mac.?
