I wasn't sure where the best place to post this would be. I have looked at a lot of online pet websites and have some questions. First of all my son is wanting a few (2-3) small tree frogs for pets. I have set up a nice habitat for them already to go. In my internet searches I noticed that many of these little guys are wild caught and sold to people like myself online and shipped overnight. I don't have a problem with this as long as it done legally and responsibly. What I do have a problem with is these people are charging up to $100 or more per frog. This seems to be a bit of a rip off to me. It's not like they have spent months of time and energy raising these guys and are getting their monies worth by charging this much for them. I'm not wanting to buy the PDFs just the little tree frogs like the red eyed ones or something similar to them. I know that many people have these running around their yards daily. What do y'all think about this?
Tree frogs
I don't care for it !!! Straight up....
Frogs are meant to be listened to, and looked at! They help determine how ecologically strongan area is.
Please consider having your son acquire another type of pet.
Thank you in advance for reading my thoughts as I know you will end up making your own decision!
Drew
Drew, how do you feel about the captive bred ones?(which I'm having trouble finding)
Both of my sons, like most boys, love the reptiles and amphibians. What would you suggest along these lines?
He already has a leopard gecko (captive bred), 2 firebelly frogs (captive bred), and some fish. He is also wanting to acquire a marbled salamander. I have found these captive bred, but they are currently out of stock. He is a very responsible young man and does his research and takes very good care of his critters. He is very aware that they will be around for many years to come as well.
Well.... Now that you have me informed as to the "Research" mindset of your son, I would have him search the net and find his "critters" via the best colleges in the nation for Reptiles and Amphibians! Maybe he could tell them of his dilemma in finding... shall we say, "Farm Raised" type Amphibians to add to his collection. He would like to be "Ecologically Responsible" in acquiring them through such resources.
I am sure he will get some definite leads! Everybody likes to help children in a situation like this!
Please let me know how it goes in the coming weeks and months!
Feel free to D-Mail. Regards,
Andrew "DREW" Leonard
Tails n Scales here in Derby, Kansas has local tree frogs, the owner is really honest and nice and would answer nay questions about good pets of the type you are looking for.. you might call him..
I am very sorry of I have offended you Andrew. That was certainly not my intention. I understand your view on this subject. I had not thought of contacting any of the colleges. I don't even know who to begin to talk to in that regards. My son is 11 and as far as 'research' goes he does what he can for his age. The rest is up to me. The only people I have talked to are Veterinary students at colleges all around the world. My most resent visit being with Dr. Siza from Brazil. Very soon I will be visiting and working with a Dr. from the Philippines and will certainly get her opinion on the matter as well. If there someone specifically you would suggest speaking with I would be happy to contact them as well. I do believe that we could ALL be more ecologically responsible in a wide variety of ways. As I said I am very sorry if I have 'hit a nerve' with you. Thank you very much for your incite.
I have been a member on DG for a few years now and though I don't 'frequent' many of the many forums I do trust many the opinions of the people in this community. That is my reason for trying to find a forum to post my questions here. To gain opinions and direction from people I believe I can trust. I apologize to anyone else whom I have offended as well. I will consider this thread closed now.
Debra~ Thank you very much for telling me about Tails-N-Scales :) I looked up their website and will certainly be in touch with them. They have exactly what we're looking for at the right prices. I noticed that they also had Russian Tortoises which my other son is looking to get. Thanks again.
Hugs,
Steph
No offense taken!
I am just an opinionated person!!!
Steph, I'm a member of an internet based local reptile forum, also a frog forum. You'll find there are similar forums in many countries, just need to do a search on the internet. There are many young kids also members of these forums. They're a great way to seek and share information. They also encourage responsible reptile and frog keeping. It's great for kids to take an interest in these creatures and be able to get responsible guidance.
There are tons of them in my neighborhood, they sing all night long! Loud little buggers!
LOL, I have some in my house and I am trying to get rid of them. They ride in on house plants that have been outside for the summer. Have caught 4 so far and put them back outside. I can still hear about 3 but they are hard to locate.
I hear them outside, but havn't seen them yet..
