May sound weird: but i want to encourage moss in an area ( shady) and eliminate the small amount or grass and weeds. Any way or products to do this?
encourage moss and kill grass/weeds
Hello.
I would think the best way to go it to remove the grass and weeds first You can just cut it out with a sharp-edged spade or sod cutter (the quickest with no chemicals method) or you can spray the area with an herbicide such as Round-Up and wait for the grass and weeds to die.
Once you have bare ground, you could purchases mosses such as Scotch Moss or something else your local garden center recommends. I have seen gardening shows where they blend together some existing moss, dirt and plain yogurt and paint that mixture on rocks. So, adding some rocks to the area and painting them with this mixture may be a good move.
Hope this helps. I would love to see pictures of your finished project. Good luck. ☺
and moss actually spreads easy, just cut a piece with the dirt from another area and place in the empty area, it will root on it's own... you need to have the same base...like if you want mossy rocks you need to transfer moss that was originally on a rock..I think there was an article here on it...be back- will try to find it...
I have had success doing the blender thing with yogurt, moss, etc. You can pour the mixture on the ground where you want it, and just make sure it doesn't dry out. Hope it works for you, and if not, Jen is correct that planting little pieces and letting them spread works well too.
a bit late but thanks to posters
