a FRAGRANT variety that is cold tolerant...any suggestions? It will have to winter inside my house but i do have a cold greenhouse to help extend the season. Would a singapore obtusa work? I hear there is a dwarf variety.
thanks in advance!

cold is relative. many plumeria can take a light freeze but that is not the norm. some can take cold and wet if they are large and planted in the ground in the right micro climate. what you want to do is get a plumeria that you like and keep it as warm as you can during the winter.

i would look into samoan fluff or slaughter pink. however, at this point i would wait until spring unless you buy a mature plant.

thank you for that..i will have fun over the winter, sourcing : )

Tucson, AZ

good luck! how cold does it get there during the winter? can you keep the plumie inside during the winter even if you let it go dormant?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

we have many nights throughout the winter at 20 degrees (or colder) I will have a greenhouse soon but it will be unheated. I also have a utility room that could harbor it as i think the living area in the house might be too dry. ?

i let mine go to sleep during the winter. around thanksgiving i cut off all the leaves and put them away. they were in the cold garage last year. i did leave a fluorescent light on in there just because i don't like leaving plants in the dark. LOL they came out okay even though we had our coldest winter in 40 yrs. i am sure the garage was in the 40s but i wasn't watering them. i transplanted them this last spring and found that the soil was still moist. no worries though because it was well draining and airy.

check out this document that someone generated from different sources. you'll see why i recommend samoan fluff or slaughter pink. i just got slaughter pink. can't wait for it to bloom.

what zone are you in??
ok...you actually initiate the hibernation...i don't think our utility room will go below 40 & it has some good light. : )

plumeria can actually keep their leaves even in cold weather. they will however drop them in the garage over time. what a mess! LOL but i cut the leaves off so that the plumies do not dehydrate through the leaves.

document on the way...

it sounds like you have a lot of trees, big trees, or both!
that was a question in my head in the middle of the night; what do you do when things are too big to move? take cuttings & start over?
i am having trouble w/my browser this morning...trying to open the document..thanks for sending it tho!!

Tucson, AZ

i have been growing them since 2001 but some of the older ones are gone. fortunately, the ones i have aren't too big to move. there are about 30 or so plants. sadly, i am addicted! =) here are some blooms from musk rainbow.

btw, i don't know what zone i am in. it is hot during the summer and not as humid. it can get cold during the winter in the desert. fortunately, we can recover during the winter days. we can get big diurnal temp swings.

that's a beaut, for sure. I have grown a few & maybe even over wintered some but i've never had a good set-up, like i do now. I managed to get to Fiji (1997) & that's where i 'discovered' them..so i am partial to the white/yellow like my first love : )

But i grow ALL KINDS of fragrant plants.

Tucson, AZ

look up celadine, too! that is a good one to have around.

i like letting them sleep during the winter. it gives me a break, too. LOL i might grow some seeds this winter but that is about it. they will all be in the garage sound asleep. i have grown them over the winter but generally find it not worth it unless they are in a greenhouse. i guess i would keep one going if it started blooming late.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

ummm..says the fragrance is somewhat like dish soap/lemony. i want one that says BREATHTAKINGLY FRAGRANT!! lol

Tucson, AZ

haha! i would not use the words dish soap. LOL lemon/citrus fragrance. aztec gold is a strong peach fragrance. sometimes it is too strong! i might have cuttings available next spring.

Tucson, AZ

here is the mess that is my paradise... =)

looks like a fun place to play, btw

it is minus the mosquitos and black widows. LOL

i will make a note about AG, buy check back with me in the springtime.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

i will show you a picture of our greenhouse when it gets finished.. and it Better be before first frost!! but it won't be a warm one; it's for my parma violets, although i do have a lemon tree that i hope will hang out in there for most of the winter.

I live in central Florida there is no plants that I can leave in the ground here. I had a small tree almost 6 inch trunk killed it to the ground struggling to come back from roots no such thing as cold hardy plumeria

Tucson, AZ

what does cold hardy mean?

Mulberry, FL

takes the cold, hardy in the cold lol to me anyways a tropical is just that lol
I wish there was or I do tons of work every year putting them up and taking them out

Tucson, AZ

just asking because some seem to do well outside in the cold all winter.

Mulberry, FL

I need those then I have wrapped from top to bottom heavy quilts down to 20's goners plant them in spring dig come late fall store them dry root for winter. I am leaning more towards the brugs more flowers they can be left in the ground for winter they flower from seed in a little over a year.

Tucson, AZ

yeah, i can imagine the 20s are tough. i have seen mine go down into the 20s but not for long periods of time.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

interesting & heartening! i have been told that anything under 50 degrees will make them so unhappy they just...die.

Tucson, AZ

they can go lower but no need to go to the extremes if there is no need.

Tucson, AZ

i used these for a some winters.

this was a heat source. i don't think it really did anything since the fabric was breathable and did not go all the way down to the ground.

looks like major pampering to me!!

Mulberry, FL

I have a plan I have a water bed heater going to try a mattress filled with water and be helped out by the sun I use a temp. car port covered with plastic all the way during the day its hot! Let the sun help heat the water then at night all that heat will radiate the heat and keep it way above freezing only use the heater on nights that get down to 20. cheap heat lol !

Tucson, AZ

no pampering! the cages were covered in november and i didn't take them off until spring. the only thing i had to do was turn the lamp on during the coldest nights.

i don't do this anymore. i just put them in the garage where it is continuously cold and dark. haha! they are dormant.

what out for those water bed heaters dana. keep up posted. this sounds interesting.
