I remember reading somewhere in Dave's that you can use liquid dish detergent to help soften hard, packed
soil. Please refresh me on the instructions.

Use Liquid Dish Detergent as Soil Conditioner?
This sounds like a Jerry Baker concoction. He maintains dish soap will "soften the soil" by acting as a "wetting agent" when used with other stuff. Google to find it however I certainly wouldn't recommend using it - Medina "Soil Activator" would be a better choice.
