Pony Tail Palm 'Yellow Star' (Beaucarnea recurvata var. albomarginata)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

PalmBob, do you know if this is the same plant as San Marco is selling as Beaucarnea 'Gold Star?' http://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=3199 Thanks

Oh forget it, this entry is clearly labeled: Additional cultivar information: (PP14650, aka Gold Star). I had even looked for it and did not see it the first time. I finally found this plant.

I see we talked about this one in 2008. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/840257/#b
I found one just like in your picture in your above link. A 5 gallon pot for $160. Still so much more than the ones in your photo.

And it was not great . A bit beaten up. So if I buy it, I will see better ones all over for cheaper but if I do not, I will not see another for 2 years.

PalmBob, a friend by South by you has offered to get this one for me wholesale. Too bad they do not deliver! LOL I cannot imagine what the 20 box looks like. I do not even know how big that is. Must be huge. I would love to see if the base gains some bulbousness at that size. Have you ever seen such big ones for sale?

02 gallon - $27.50
07 gallon - $70.00
20 Box - $220.00

Wow, that price seems awfully good... go for it!

Too bad it is on the other side of the state!

PalmBob,. do you know if this one is the same as this entry? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/188245/

it is... pretty sure that's B guatemalensis. But not 100% on any of them. However, sure is exactly what I have been entering in the plant files.

I just read up on the 2 and am totally confused. My usual. So should the 2 entries be combined or left as is?

Look at the variegation on this one. YUM! http://www.flickr.com/photos/karlgercens/3327489438/in/photostream/ I want this one!

wow. All the B variegated I see available have the thin leaves typical of B guatemalensis and that was the conclusion of several 'experts' on Xericworld.com a few years ago. I sort of agree.... but never seen an actual species name attached to any of these. I have had a few sellers say it is recurvata, only cause that's the most common species of Beaucarnea available... but none could really verify it. I have however seen a moderately different plant at the San Diego arboretum (aka Quail Gardens) that I am pretty sure is B recurvata... has very thick, leather leaves but a bit narrower side to side and has a fat base like most B recurvatas do. Variegation is different as well (more like in that photo you just showed above). It is a striking plant and you should check it out sometime.
