Something is digging up my garden bed!

Arlington, TX

Any ideas anyone? It is pretty much contained to one long narrow bed along a privacy fence. There are rows dug and all the dirt has been disturbed. The entire bed no longer has any mulch and I assume it is now under the dirt. I am thinking moles but see no evidence of them elsewhere. I would suspect an armadillo but don't think one could get into my yard. I am perplexed at the moment. I have gone out in the day, night and even dusk but haven't seen the guilty party. Not sure what to do at the moment but if we ever get rain I would like to replant some lost plants in there and remulch for winter. I think I might buy myself a pellet gun or maybe just a few traps.

Put a picture up, I bet someone my recognize the damage. Armadillos dig small holes looking for grubs. Josephine had fought a mole at a garden where she volunteers and might can tell if that is it. A neighbor had complained of rats and asked if we had any problems with them. I told him no, but the dogs saw this one night and wouldn't quit barking. I went out with a flashlight and found this guy. All the animals are looking for food and water now days. We are subject to have anything in our yards.

How about a possum?...I was sure we had armadillos in the beds until we saw the oppossum early one morning...same results and the animal had gone through the fence?!...amazing how much $$ we put into that fence! LOL

Oh, I did go down to Walmart (sic?) and purchase a large number of cheap solar lights and placed them throughout the damaged beds...no more animals...at least for the past month...

I do have a possum that has been visiting for several years. I never noticed such bad damage in one place before. I also have solar lights, though not a great many in that bed. I would rather it be the possum as he comes and then goes, moles are more permanent. I see the possum on top of our privacy fence so climbing into the yard wouldn't be hard for it. Hope I figure out who is to blame soon.

Is it digging a hole, like for grubs or whatever, or just scruffing around? I've noticed several different things here digging out a trough like trying to get down to some cool dirt to lie on. The squirrel it doesn't much matter, but the bunny scuffs up a pretty good area.

Both, digging trenches, holes and basically acting like a plow turning up most of the dirt in the bed. Still haven't seen the rascal though.

Arlington is 'lucky' to have many little creek beds where all sorts of willdlife lives- until there is high water, or no water, then they are drawn to the food and water such as it is- in the urban areas- possums, coons, dillos, rats, voles, moles, feral cats, and they will move right in, grab the dog or cat food, til your yard an garden for free lookin for bugs you would cheerfully poison-dillos go down- look for burrows aroun foundations and porches for a hole big enuff for a roun body to squeeze into, most coons n possums go up for safety, and food and water are usually a just after dark activity. Good luck, try leaving little shallow bowls of water aroun, and watch around these...
