I have this new feathered friend in my yard. I have seen and or startled him at least 8 times in the past week. He likes to hang out in the ash tree near my bird feeder that has black oil sunflower seeds. 2 other times he was under my large covered carport, once on the back of a patio chair and again on the top of my 4 runner. I almost missed him on the truck, but I caught a glimpse, slowed down and grabbed the camera again. I feel so privileged he is in MY yard, but want to know why? Does he eat other birds? Or is he more or a furry vermin eater? I have a very healthy population of rats and mice in my yard.
Do I want this type of bird in my yard?
How can I keep him attracted if so?
CLOSED: is this a falcon?
not a 100% sure but I think it is a Cooper's Hawk.....and they do eat smaller birds.
Awesome i.d. Nanny. It sure look like some of the photos. I was reading on Wikipedia they do prey on Songbirds and jays by hanging out near bird feeders. Dang it! I was really hoping he was here for the rats, but I doubt it. I wish he would just eat crow! Pardon by bad pun, lol
But those crows are everywhere!
Here the Mourning doves are a favorite meal and there are plenty of those around here! I had one go after a Pileated Woodpecker in my backyard this summer. It missed and that made me very happy! That is just being a hawk and they miss more times then they catch. Raptors are my favorite group of birds. Very fascinating group!
Ditto to Cooper's Hawk
