It should spend time curing for best flavor. Store at room temp 4-6 weeks.

Waiting allows the squash to loose some water and makes for a less bland, sweeter flavor.
In winter squash, there are other physiological changes that occur on aging. One of the more interesting of these is that the vitamin C content drops (as you might expect) while the pro-vitamin A content (β-carotene and other similar nutrients) actually increases.
