Rememer a while back I posted pictures of a momma turtle laying her eggs. We had been waiting for them to hatch and wondering if they would with the conditions so hot and dry here. We figured they would hatch the end of August. Just last evening my husband and I took a walk around the pond and the area they were layed was still the same, no hole, no progress we could see. This morning my son walked around the pond and a while later he came back holding a baby turtle. He said the little guy had his head sticking out of a hole and came out. He said there were two more he could see in the hole.
Since it has been so dry here, the pond is pretty dried up in areas and is in the process of getting dug out deeper, so the area they were on the trail has mounds of dirt close and the pond area is mostly dried up. We didn't want them wondering off to nothingness and not finding the water, so we have taken them and put them in a tank habitat. We will probably release them on the far side of the pond that still has quite a bit of water.By the way, there ended up being 4 total.
Thought I'd share the pictures with you.
THEY HATCHED!!!!
That is sooo nice that you looked after them all that time. What a wonderful person,
I'd like to have neighbors like you :)
Thanks Passionflowerz
:)))
How very cool!
Here is a picture fresh out of the water, they are so pretty and green. We gave them a little Romaine lettuce, they ate up the first batch so this was more. We will get them some food today, not sure if there is mush out there as dry as it has been, but till we release them we'll get them something good and nutricious.
So cute! Our turtles always liked worms - but hard to find in this drought, I'm sure.
hmmmmmm, Smedge it seems we have now added a new love to our Poultry and Livestock forum! Gotta love turtles!!
Turtles are livestock, right?
I love turtles. I have lots of turtle figurines all over my house. :)
One of the 4 seems to be not ready to face the world. The other 3 stay pretty much in the water and it is hunkered down in the dirt. Hope it is okay. We got them some hatching and juvenile turtle food for sliders that has vitamins and minerals. Hope to give them a good jump start before we release them. It's going to be hard to let them go.
I had to rescue some this summer too. They are so cute
Baby turtles are soooooo cute!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for helping the little guys!
