Looks like quite high country they're growing in there. Do you see these at lower altitudes or is it too hot for them lower down?
Yes it mainly occurs in the higher elevations in this state. The lower deserts are too hot and dry.
Probably, I'm guessing above 2500 ft., as this map would show the Counties, but dosen't show the elevations. But the low deserts are mainly in the southern part of the state.

Interesting, it seems to be one of those grow almost anywhere kind of plants. The best specimens I've seen were growing in sand in a worked out area of a sand quarry, it must thrive on poor soil. I must visit the 'low deserts' sometime (preferably in winter!)
The springtime is fairly mild, about 80-95F, in April. Many plants are blooming then. Some bloom in May when it's 90-100F.
95F would be a record breaking summer temperature here! But its 'dry heat' you get there so a bit more bearable, so people say (similar thing here with the damp cold, I've heard Canadians say they dislike the combination of cold & high humidity here, though they're used to far lower temperatures)
I don't know what a damp cold would do to me, being someone that is used to a dry heat.
When I was very young I lived in cold country (Idaho), and my parents said I was always getting ill, maybe that's one of the reasons our family moved here.
Anyways, if you come over this way, be sure to check out the Desert Botanical Gardens in late April would be best. They have a special section featuring wildflowers, not to mention the rest of the garden with all the cacti & succulents.
Thanks Xeno
