A question about pickling

A neighbor gifted me with a bunch of green tomatoes. I wanted to pickle them with some squash, eggplant, ect. and some herbs. How would I go about the vinegar? My brother uses half vinegar half hot water for his cukes. Would that work? Thanks for your help.
