If I could only have one brug ...

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It would be MEM. Just when I thought my brug. bloom season was not going to happen due to the extreme heat, it has cooled down and cool weather = lots of bloom. A few other brugs. are also putting out the bells, but MEM carries the day.

Your brug looks amazing with the caladiums. What a beautiful combo. Annette

Thank you, Dana (yes, the smell is heavenly), Kareoke, and Cem. This is a new border this year and what a good time I had putting it together. I'll be sad when the time comes to take it apart.

Well I know what a job you will have, in our area it is great all summer then comes the dreaded time of taking them all in for the winter. if you have cutting to spare I would appreciate hearing from you.

Totally agree....that is one of the prettiest plant combinations...I have seen....
Understandable why she is your favourite...well done.

Beautiful ! How old is your Brug? I've never had one bloom like that - not in 5 years. What is your secret? I do plant food - regular MG and water like crazy. They are healthy but only give out 5 or so blooms at once.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I very much appreciate hearing from all of you and pleased you like my new border. As I was removing spent blooms on MEM today, I was amazed to notice she is putting out another round of blooms almost as profuse as the first. I should have taken a picture today of this second round as tomorrow will be back in the 90's and the flowers may not continue to grow, they may even drop. This plant is 6 years old and is fed Miracle Grow 3 times a week. She loves to be fed! Oh, and watered at least once a day. A high maintenance gal for sure but ever so worthy. We've just had all new air-conditioning put in and the 4 workmen had a fit over MEM when they saw her. They ate their lunch on the kitchen door steps in order to study her further. Would love to know what they had to say to the wives that evening in trying to describe a plant none of them had ever seen before.

Is this one plant or 2? How large is the pot? I am not feeding well enough according to your regiment. I would love a cutting this spring if you have some for trade/sale

Wow1 Very pretty.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Tussee, I'd also like to know how big your pot is for MEM?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm guessing MEM's pot is 25 gal.

Tussee

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

That's huge, how do you move that size pot around? And, how often do you repot MEM or any other of your brugs? I've gotten 3 new ones that need repotting, but I don't want to mess with them since one is blooming, and the other 2 have tiny buds.

Cem, you can repot a brug. any time it is needed. Growing space will help you have more blooms. Several of my brugs. are in large containers so they are moved about on a small open cart. Too heavy to carry. All of my brugs. get fresh pro-mix in the spring; it's a big job but a necessary one. I pot up most of my new plants as they arrive in the spring and this year found myself having to buy 7 bales of pro-mix. I'm hopeful that numbers goes down next year.

Thanks for the info.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Tussee, do you give them epsom salts?? Sure helps make more buds/blooms.

My 2 humongous brugs are in 24 inch pots. Everything is blooming right now..........oh, my............what a show! I'll have to get a pic.

Tussee, that is one hunka brug. LOL

Beautiful plant!

Please explain what pro mix is, and also how much epsom salts we need to add? Thanks

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Gosh, boy did I get caught up in your beautiful Angel. Like everyone else, I would love a cutting. Thank you for all the info re: care. What does MEM stand for? Someone sent me KBS and I have no idea what that is .

Brug names and abbreviations...
http://davesgarden.com/files/content/v/1/

KBS = Kurpark Bad Salzchlirf

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Linda and thank you so much. I don't think I will ever abbreviate because the real name could get lost.
Now, does KBS come in different colors? I think I just saw two postings and one was yellow and the other pink!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Not for sure on the color, I just copied and pasted the name for you. But I did a Google search, and it shows it in pink and yellow!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

KBS is listed in the Brug registry as being white/cream. This is more accurate as the information is provided by the hybridizer or the seedling grower if he has the hybridizer's permission to enter the information. Dave's PlantFiles lists it as bright yellow, but I don't know who made the entry. Not all entries in the PlantFiles are accurate.
http://ibrugs.com/Resources/PhotoAlbums.aspx
KBS has L'Amour, a single pink, as the pollen parent. This may be responsible for the sometime peachy color. Creamy, yellows and orange colored Brugs tend to to be paler in warm or hot weather and darker in cool weather. This may explain the peachy color on some of the photos in the PlantFiles. This is opposite of what the pink Brugs do.

I also "googled" Brugmansia 'KBS' photos. The photos of the pink Brugs were not of KBS. KBS is a B. candida. Notice that the thin corolla neck is for the most part covered by the calx.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/94708/
The pink colored Brugs listed as KBS have a long exposed corolla neck typical of versicolor.

I hope this explains why you are seeing pink and yellow 'KBS' Brugs.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

My Solid Gold is actually more orange. Even mild changes in the soil within your yard can cause the same brugs to vary in coloration.. I have nowhere to bring in anything except cuttings, yet I get nice tall brugs, about 5' - 6' tall if the cutting from below the Y, with 2 or 3 nice flushes. This was a rough year for gardens, including and especially drought, with occaisional storms, but no consistancy. Even simple plants like obedient plant don't look well this year and I don't know if my mums will bloom before frost.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Hmmm.............woodspirit..........if you have a cutting or 2 to share, I would be glad to trade..........I have Susanne (pink) and a NOID I started from a seed from Monika. (nice pink also). Susanne makes huge blooms.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, I can get you one. Do you want from below the Y or above the Y. Are you in the address exchange? Please d-mail me.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh, I'd like Suzanne when we get ready to trade. Still warm here.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

I love all "Angels" and want a cutting of all I don't have! Everyone to the rescue!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Tussee, what an absolutely gorgeous brug your MEM is, and woodspirit1 I love your Solid Gold a lot, too. Sigh! Oh, to have brugs that beautiful! I'm going to have to feed mine more and repot them. Do they like being root bound? Mine are. I have no idea how many gallons the pots are. Very big, that's all I know. I'm going to get some bigger pots for them. Will have to get some more MG, too. I have not been feeding enough, me thinks.

Karen

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I get the impression that most brug growers throw some kind of fertilizer at their brugs every time they walk past them, lol. I started mine in composted manure and bone meal, like most things. Since then I have used rose fertilizer, MG, chicken manure, triple phosphates, and definitely epsom salts mixed with most of those. I'm sure I've used other stuff too. I like the Bayer's 2-in-1 to keep off insects but am worried about killing honey bees.
I think I will see if I can use some sort of soap spray next year.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I like to use the pelleted systemic. Bees are usually out during the day while the strongest fragrance is at night. I don't ever recall seeing little bee bodies around my Brugs. Wish I knew if pesticide makes it way to the nectar.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

And what would that be called????? Sounds like something that would simplfy MY life in the g'house.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Anna,
I haven't forgotten you question, but I can't get to the barn until later today. I should have the answer for you later today.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Woodspirit1, you might want to try Monterey Garden Insect Spray on your brugs. I've used it successfully for lily beetles and caterpillars. Works great on chewing insects and is not supposed to harm bees. Environmentally safe.

Karen

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

All are so lovely, Esp Mem, Missbehavin, and the last yellow orange one. I so hope to have more than a single blooming Brug next year.

What is the advantage or disadvantige of taking cutings from above or below the Y? I'm thinkint that below will be taller with a canopy of blooms and above may produce more blooms, but on a shorter plant.

So much I need to learn!

Sheri ^_^

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Sheri, you are right about where to cut.
