Can we grow lettuce in the Fall?

Rockwall, TX

I'm a total newbie and I was wondering if we can grow lettuce here in North Texas in the Fall? I've started tomatoes and bush beans. I hope to do garlic and onions. Anything else that is good in the Fall?

Yes! Fall/winter/early spring is the only time you can grow lettuce in Texas. You can also grow broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, greens. Brussels sprouts, cilantro, and chives.

Radishes work well too.

and, beets, turnips, carrots, & spinach!

AND, you'll enjoy the fall/winter/early spring garden much better because the weather will be cooler, and the buggies go into hiding for the winter!

Are those Cabbages planted in 5 gallon buckets Gymgirl? They look absolutely gorgeous and would love to try something similar with other plant's and trees.

Yep! To date, I've grown almost exclusively in 5-gallon, homemade eBuckets. There's a whole eBucket thread over in the Self-Contained Box Gardens forum here. But, I'll make it easy for you, and direct you to the pictorial tutorial on how to construct your own eBucket. If you have all the pieces prepped and ready, you can put one together and have it planted in roughly 15 minutes or less!

Hugs!

Here's a picture of some mature cabbages. I call this composition, "My Three Sisters!"

Here's some more examples of what you can do in eBuckets and homemade earthboxes (HEBs).

Micheal, you need to venture over to the veggie gardening forum.

Mrs. Cave, here's a link to a planting guide for North Texas. http://www.redentas.com/pdfs/veg_planting_guide.pdf

Mustard and Collard Greens do VERY well in EBs (patented Earthboxes) and HEBs (homemade earthboxes)

Cool! I'll have to put a few of those together and test them out for sure. Thanks for all the info, pics, links, and care in answering my question.
